WE WERE MAGNIFICENT
Youth boss Eric Kinder gave us his thoughts on the Youth team 2-2 draw at Gresty Road whilst trying to do battle with a sat-nav system that insisted on sending him back in to Crewe town centre.
We think he got back alright in the end ... anyway, here's what he had to say about the game:
"It was absolutely boiling hot down here, and it is credit to both sides that they played such an entertaining game of football.
Our football was tremendous, there is no other way of describing it. It's the happiest I've been with 90 minutes from a team of mine for a long, long time. We were very, very good in all areas of the pitch.
It's just a shame that they scored with almost the last kick of the game, even though the result doesn't count for anything in the grand scheme of things.
It's the first time, in many years of me taking Youth teams to Crewe, that we have taken them on at playing football. They are an excellent side, and they have a superb philosophy, so you tend to find that they can play their way around you. We didn't let that happen today, and we took the game to them on the floor. Like I say, they are an out and out passing team, and even though I have drilled it in to my teams in the past, that they must not allow themsleves to start going long ball, it usually happens. Well, I'm delighted to say that this time we went toe to toe in a proper game of football, and it was a cracker to watch.
Credit to Dario Gradi, he came over at the end of the game and he said this to me: 'I regard this group of players that I have here as one of the best groups of footballers that I have ever had. I have to admit that you have outplayed us here today.' I thought that was absolutely terrific to hear. I don't want to go too over the top, or anything, but we played extremely well.
We went one up through a stunning goal - and that's not just because of the manner of the strike, but also because of the player who did it. Connor Tinnion sent a free kick in to the box from the right hand side, and Tom Aldred twisted himself around to complete a 100% authentic, no-two-ways-about-it, textbook, clinical, out-of-the-top-drawer overhead kick that flew in to the back of the net. It was wonderful to see, and he is the last person I would expect to see do something like that. He has many good things about his game, the lad, but I didn't have Johann Cruyff bicycle kicks from the penalty spot as being one of them.
The problem is, he celebrated the damn thing as if it was the World Cup winner, so they equalised about 20 seconds later with him still doing his mental flik-flaks. One of his main jobs is to make sure that he has organised the team immediately after we have scored. I ask him, for 30 seconds or so, to make sure that he's shouting at people to keep them in focus. Unfortunately, with him running round like a lunatic and looking for TV cameras that weren't even there, he forgot that bit. The ball was played in to our box and it popped up and hit Matt Duffy on the hand. The Ref gave a penalty, which may have been harsh, but I'd have been disappointed if it was our shout and it hadn't been given, so we live with that.
We got back in front when Andy Cook was brought down in the box, and Matt Duffy made no mistake as he slotted that one away. We had so many chances after that, you wouldn't believe it. Cook has had six really clear cut chances, but it just wasn't his day. Bowman was the same, but it just wouldn't go in for either of them. I've told them not to worry about that, because it happens, and the important thing from both of them was that their overall play was terrific.
I played Steve Swinglehurst at centre half for this one, because that's his favoured position, and he looked like he'd been playing there for the last 3 years. Tom Aldred hardly put a foot wrong beside him ... and I'm not going to keep singling players out, because I couldn't fault any of them. They passed it around quickly and crisply, they kept looking for the ball and making themselves available, and they looked like they enjoyed themsleves.
We conceded right at the end when we failed to close the ball down on the edge of our box, but we can learn from that. We now know that it's a 90 minute game, and that teams can ruin things for you if you don't keep going all the way.
I gave Andy Cook a bit of a talking to after the game. He was down in the dumps about missing his chances, so I've told him to stop allowing that to get on top of him. He really doesn't understand just how good he is, so he has to stop letting things upset him. If he gets himself properly fit, and bulks up a bit, he'll be frightening. A few good sessions on the weights and his life will become a lot easier. It doesn't need any major work, or anything like that, but if he can apply himself to that side of things, and if he becomes stronger, then he is going to give himself a real chance.
So, we come away really happy overall. Everybody who watched had a good time, and the lads have enhanced their own reputation yet again."
