Eric Kinder talked to us about the 4-3 away win over Huddersfield Academy at the beginning of this week:

"We played Huddersfield during pre-season last season and there were a bag full of goals on that occasion as well, so it's definitely a fixture that brings a big scoreline.

If I look back at that game, I think I can say that we have the same problems now as we had back then. At the moment we look really uncomfortable whenever we are faced with a set piece. All three of their goals came from crosses, and that's not something that I can be happy about.

What I do have to accept is that the back four is made up mostly of first years, and they still have a lot to learn. That's something that I am prepared to bear in mind.

Alex Mitchell has held his hands up for their first goal, which came in the first half, because it sailed over his head from a free kick. He misjudged the flight of it and left himself with no chance, so he's disappointed with that. Their next two goals were poor from a defensive point of view, but I kept having to remind myself that we haven't really done any work yet. It's pre-season and it's all about match fitness at the moment, and we do still have time to make sure that we are beginning to understand where we should be at any given point during the game. We worked at this last season and eventually got it right, so I'm confident that we can do the same again.

I think Huddersfield will be disappointed with their performance, as they have some very good young players there, so I am pleased that we took advantage of their off-day whenever we were attacking. We scored four, but we created so many other good chances that it was very encouraging.

Ryan Bowman and Andy Cook had three great chances each, and they were just the ones they didn't score from. They are both disappointed that they didn't score more, but I'd be more worried if they weren't getting in to the positions to be on the end of the chances that are being created. As it was, Ryan scored twice, Cookie got his goal and Connor weighed in with one for himself, so it was a decent day in front of goal.

Their keeper is the England U19 goalkeeper, and he showed us why he's got that far. He made some fantastic saves, particularly in the first half, and I was starting to wonder whether we would ever get one past him. His exploits got them to the break at 1-0 up, but they also had the Ref to thank for that as well. There was a really bizarre incident where they took a free kick and knocked it across the face of their own box. Ryan Bowman couldn't believe his luck, so he ran on to it and slotted it in to the back of the net. For some reason, the Referee disallowed it. He told us that the ball hadn't cleared the box, so he had no choice. I can tell you now, if this had been a League game I'd have been sent to the stands and banned for 3 matches, because I was furious. The first thing I tried to explain was that it was their free kick, and they'd taken it from outside of the area. Secondly, they had chosen to roll it across the face of their own goal. It was a perfectly good goal, but they weren't going to budge so I bit my tongue and got on with it.

Connor equalised for us early in the second half when he came in from the right hand side and picked up a crossfield pass. He cut inside on to his left foot and bent it in to the top corner. It was a terrific goal from a young man who is brimming with confidence after his spell with the first team. He showed us just what a talent he can be when he is on his game, because he was the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

Ryan then scored two strikers goals from inside the area, to put us 3-1 up, and at that point I thought we might end up coasting. We soon knocked that on the head when we gave away two silly goals, but we kept going and we got our reward with the winner. That was created when Tinnion knocked a great cross in and Andy Cook rose to thump home a towering header at the back post.

I'd had a bit of a go at them during the half time break, because I felt they were being lazy, but they really turned it on in the second half. As I say, it became a good performance for us when we were going forward, but we have also been shown a few area that we will definitely have to work on.

Having said all of that, and as I have told the lads, I am much happier with what I have in front of me now than I was at this same time last year. I didn't think that we were going to be strong enough to compete last season, but the lads proved me wrong on that. This time I think we have the nucleus of a very good squad, and I can see us being ready to go right from the first whistle. We won't be playing catch up this time, so it should be interesting."

Team: Mitchell, Lakeland, Jukes, Aldred, Duffy, Tinnion, Blake, Law, Wood, Bowman, Cook. Subs: Replacements were used regularly throughout the game.
