IT WAS AN EVEN GAME
Youth team coach Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 1-1 draw at Morecambe:
"We lost Connor Tinnion to illness in the afternoon, which made team selection even more difficult, in particular when you consider the other players who were already missing.
We tried to play a 3-5-2 style of formation in the first half, and we were poor. It didn't work for us at all, and it took away from the enthusiasm for the game that we otherwise would have had.
We made a sloppy mistake just before half time, and allowed them in to score, and that was the way we went in to the break.
I changed the system in the second half, taking us back to a normal back four, and we were much better for it.
Andy Cook had a goal ruled offside when the linesman decided that one of our players had touched the ball over the line, but it was an incorrect decision.
Nothing seemed to go for us after that but, to be fair to the lads, they dominated it.
We equalised through an excellent finish from Andy Cook and I did think that we were going to go on and win it after that. Steve Hindmarch hit the bar with an excellent header, and we came close on a couple of other occasions, but it just wouldn't go in.
We then got away with a bit of a mix up at the back, when Alex Mitchell came for a ball that he didn't really have any chance of getting to. Fortunately, Jonny Blake got back to clear it off the line and we were able to get the point.
Overall it was a very even game, because they were much better than us in the first half. We were the better side in the second half, so we can't really complain.
Steve Swindlehurst had another game and he really got to grips with things in the second half. Shaun Law was the same, and he seemed to adapt much better when we went to a flat back four. We could probably go right through the side and say that the lads didn't play well in the first half, but that they all played much better in the second.
We created more chances than they did on the night, so it may be a little bit disappointing that we didn't take the points.
It hasn't been a perfect end to the season in any way, but we have to get on with it. The positives are always there, and it is good for us that the younger lads are getting 90 minutes under their belts. That will stand us all in good stead.
I brought our keeper John Jamieson on for the last 12 minutes or so, to play up front, because we were running out of steam a bit. He has been telling me about the 6 goals that he scored when he played as a centre forward for Carlisle City, so we gave him a chance to do that for us. We were getting a lot of free kicks and corners at the time, and I thought that his height might make a difference for us. There was one cross, from a corner, that he got to first and he tried to punch it in, instead of head it. I think he must have forgotten where he was.
We go on to the last game of the season on Saturday, now, and we are all hoping that we can win that one. The lads deserve to go out on a high for the way they have performed this season, so we'll see what we can do.
I didn't use Matt Brown or Matt Wood tonight, because I want them to be as fit as they can be for the Preston game. All three of the second year lads will play in that game, and we all want to say goodbye to them properly, after they have played the last game of the season."
