WE DIDN'T PLAY WELL AT ALL
We spoke to Eric Kinder about the Youth defeat against Walsall on Saturday:
"Walsall only have 3 games left to play now, so this was one that they knew they had to win, and they did.
They have nine points on us and, even though we have two games in hand, I can't see them dropping the points that we need them to.
The day started badly for us, when we were sent to the wrong ground, so that meant that we ended up arriving late. Once we got there the Ref decided that we could only have ten minutes to change, so it wasn't ideal. I'm not using it as an excuse for what followed, but it definitely didn't help.
Our first half performance was unacceptable in this game. We were two down within 20 minutes, and we just didn't bother playing at all during the whole of that first period.
For the first time this season, I actually thought that we looked like a very poor side. There were some harsh words said during the break, and there was plenty of finger pointing and, to be fair, we played much better after the break.
We pulled a goal back when Mike Hepplethwaite played Andy Cook through and, even though his first shot was saved, he followed it up and managed to put it away.
We then had four absolutely glorious chances. Shaun Law put one over from 3 yards out, Hepplethwaite had two shots that he blazed over the bar, and then we had a corner that bobbled around in front of goal for what seemed like an age, but none of our players got on the end of it.
We got ourselves in a position to equalise on so many occasions, which we deserved to on balance of play, and a draw would have been enough for us. We didn't want to lose, so we went for it in the end.
We conceded the third goal in the fourth minute of time added on, but I can accept that one. I changed the formation to 3-4-3 in an attempt to claw something back, and it almost worked for us.
We lost the game in the first half, and the difference in the displays that we gave either side of the break were literally chalk and cheese.
Like I say, we could make all sorts of excuses about being late, being sent to the wrong ground, being without a couple of key players ... but I won't do that. The bottom line is that we had four great chances to change things in our favour, and we couldn't take them. We've paid the penalty for that.
We now have to make sure that we win our remaining five games, and then you never know. It might make them wobble a bit, but I can't really see it.
They have gambled with their fixtures over the last few weeks, playing on Saturday and Tuesday for a while, and it has worked for them.
Mind you, as I said to the lads, it is not this result that has lost us the League title. It was our performances and the results that we got against Accrington Stanley. We dropped five points against them, and it has cost us heavily.
The season has still been a success, though, as we will discuss when we do our end of season review."
