YOUTH BRING DELIGHT FOR ERIC
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 4-1 away win over Mansfield Town:
"I can't be anything else but absolutely delighted tonight.
We have achieved our aim. We set out at the beginning of the year to get to the third round of the Youth Cup and have a bash at an Academy side. Now we've got that wish.
I felt we were a little bit nervous in the first ten minutes, which was understandable. It was a big game for the lads and they had to settle down quickly. They didn't settle down quickly enough for my liking, but they are saying in the dressing room that I'm a hard task master. If that's the case then fine, I don't mind that, because we are all on a big roll at the moment.
We are scoring goals for fun, and I thought we looked tight at the back. I thought we fully deserved the victory tonight, and it could have been by a few more if I'm being honest. Gary Madine should have got himself a couple in the first half, but we'll let him away with it on this occasion.
After a bit of a nervy start we got in front through Andrew Cook. His work rate is phenomenal and he puts players under pressure. He knows he's a clumsy 'so and so' but he's effective. He got the first one, then he helped himself to a second one just before half time, which was crucial for us.
I said to them at half time that the next goal was important. If we got it then we could stroll on. If they got it then we would have a hard 45 minutes in front of us. Low and behold within two minutes they were back in the game at 2-1. We'd got a bit cocky at half time thinking we'd done the business, and we hadn't, so we need to learn from that.
Then Gary Madine scored with a fantastic finish and Andrew Cook rounded it off with his hat-trick, and it made it a really good night for us.
The centre forwards have done the business again. They'll get all the praise, of course they will, but our defence is looking strong and we don't give goals away any more. Their goal was a poor one, we didn't close it down, but that's me being really picky and the lads fully deserved their victory tonight.
There is a very excited bunch of lads in that dressing room. Praise is coming to them from all angles. My job is to keep their feet on the floor, which is going to be really difficult.
If you look over our last ten results, they are really flying and credit to them. There are some good footballers in this group and, like I keep saying, there are some young ones in there. Let's hope they can keep their feet on the floor and we can get to Christmas still in this competition. If we can then we will have a great New Year in front of us.
The only down side of tonight is that we have taken a couple of knocks.
Matthew Wood has struggled a bit since he came back from his injury, and he got whacked again tonight. He shouldn't really have come out for the second half but he wanted to give it a go.
Ged Dalton is ok, he just had a bit of a rough night and Jonny Blake has been carrying an ankle injury. With those three little niggles, and Dan Wordsworth suspended, it's going to stretch us for Saturday against Blackpool. We'll take a look at where we are on Friday morning and make some decisions from there."
