WE DESERVE TO GO THROUGH
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 2-0 Cup victory over Stockport at Brunton Park:
"Now I can sit back and look at it I suppose we've been very comfortable all night - although it hasn't seemed like that at the time, and especially the last 20 minutes of the first half.
We started off unbelievably well and their goalkeeper has made two or three great, great saves. I think he stopped Browny in the first minute and he had another one a few minutes later from Cooky, who is on a decent streak.
When we got the first I was sitting back thinking of our recent performances, where we've scored a lot of goals. Then, all of a sudden, we get a silly ball that has got Dan to commit himself and it's a sending off.
I have no complaints about that whatsoever. The laws of the game state that if your foot leaves the floor, and if you're on the floor and you don't make contact with the ball and get the person, then it's a red card. We talked about it before the game, but Dan has got sucked in because Steven Hindmarch has played a loose pass.
After that we fell to pieces a little bit. I thought we started feeling sorry for ourselves and started just kicking it, but we're better than that.
The formation (4-3-2) was, I thought, the right thing to do. I didn't just want to go with one up front, because then we might never have got out of our areas, so we went with the three in midfield and to be fair to the lads they've run themselves in to the ground. That's why we had to make those two substitutions in the second half.
I thought second half again their keeper has made a couple of good saves, but we've seen a fantastic finish from Gary Madine. If he scored that in the first team on a Saturday then everyone would have been raving about it. He was under pressure but he was the only one who was calm and he's slid it in against what looked an excellent goalkeeper. After that I thought we played it out, and in the end we've played a long, long time with ten men so we had some tired lads in the changing rooms.
I thought our two up front were magnificent all night. For two young lads of 16 and 17 I thought they were outstanding and I'm glad that it was those two (Cook and Madine) who got the goals.
Cooky is, in a nice way, a scruffy footballer - but he's very, very effective. He looks at times uncoordinated. The ball bounces from foot to foot, but the thing is more times than not he comes out with it and it works for him. His finish to make it 1-0 was his left foot, which is his weaker foot, and it was terrific.
As for Gary Madine, he goes from strength to strength. I've known him since he came in 12/13 months ago and that's probably the best I've seen him play. His overall game - not just his goal - but his hold up play, his runs, his defending and enthusiasm to drag the team through was brilliant. I don't really want to single him out too much, because it really was such a good team performance, but he was very, very good.
As I say looking back now, despite the sending off, we never really had any problems. The only problems we had were at set pieces, but that was the only area they looked like hurting us and, to be fair, we dealt with them.
The sad thing is that Dan will pick up a three match ban, because it was dangerous play, but that is something we'll have to look at now. I'm one of those guys that thinks that football doesn't allow you to be on a high for long, because it'll come back and bite you.
Dan's had a terrific season so far and he hasn't done much wrong at all. He's got himself in to the Reserves, he had a problem last season with picking up bookings for talking back to referees and linesmen which he's sorted but, as I say, football doesn't allow you to be on a high for long. It was a ball he went for, and once he was committed he was always going to be in trouble if he didn't get it - unfortunately he's paid the price. He'll learn and it's just a shame that the ban is going to be for the next round of the Youth Cup as well.
We're OK now if that happens to one of our centre halves, because we've got people who can come in. Matt Duffy's come in and done more than hold his own. In fact he's one of those that long-term he might actually end up a better centre-half than left back. So, we can cover Dan's loss, there's plenty of cover, but he is one of our key players and he will be missed.
We also had John Jamieson in tonight. He's a 17-year-old goalkeeper brought in from Carlisle City. He impressed me when we played Cumberland under 18's in a friendly the other week, and Carlisle City and the Carlisle Glass League have been really helpful here. They've allowed us to sign John on for the rest of the season on a non-contract basis, and he'll come in and back up Alex Mitchell.
Hopefully, somewhere along the line, we'll get the chance to put him in and have a look at him as well, because he's 6'4, a very imposing character, and a lovely lad. We needed some cover so we've got him in. He's a Carlisle boy as well, but who knows what'll happen. It won't affect his Carlisle City stuff but he will be here, and you never know, football's a strange game, someone might see him or whatever, you just never know.
Overall though I'm unbelievably pleased with the performance and they deserve to be in the next round."
