UNITED YOUTH 4 - 1 OLDHAM YOUTH
Gary Madine put three away, to make it 9 for the season, and Andy Cook added another as United continue to score for fun in their Youth games.
Eric Kinder spoke to us after the game:
"It wasn't the brightest first half, but it was very good in the second and I am very happy.
I think both sides were guilty of the drab start, and it made for a poor game for the first half hour or so. It got to the point where I was wondering whether it was one of those days where we wouldn't quite get things going, but we managed to get ourselves in front and it perked things up a bit.
Andy Cook was brought down in the box after he turned his man and Gary Madine stepped up to bury it. It was a very good spot kick, and there was never any doubt that he would score once he set the ball up.
We were better after the goal, but we didn't really hit the tempo that I want in that first half at all. It was far too scrappy and we weren't making things happen.
We had a few words at half time and we completely dominated after that. We played some good football and we scored some good goals, which is exactly what you want to see.
Our second came when Jonny Blake came forward and gave it to Gary Madine. He cut them open with a little back heel, and Andy Cook was on to it like a flash. He was able to go through and finish off what was a good move.
The third was down to Jonny Blake again, because he kept hold of it before giving it to Steve Hindmarch. They worked together, and the cross went to the back post, where Connor Tinnion did well to pull it back. Gary Madine had found a yard of space and he made no mistake as he volleyed it in.
Gary Madine then broke the offside trap late on, went one against one with the keeper, and then went round him to claim a very good hat-trick.
I took Alex Mitchell off late in the game because I think that Oldham had lost their heads a little bit. There were some silly fouls and I was concerned that one of them might just fancy clattering our keeper. I wanted to look after him for mid-week so I put Grant Carson on for the last ten minutes or so. Almost as soon as he came on the ball popped around a bit and someone hit it, and in it went. It made no real difference to us, because it was comfortable by then. We'd have liked a clean sheet, but it didn't spoil the day.
I have absolutely no complaints at all about our finishing from today. We've probably had four and a half chances, and we have scored four of them. Oldham always produce very good Youth sides, year in year out, and they have a history of winning things. To beat a set up like that by 4-1, and to dominate as well, it says a lot about what we are trying to do. We fully deserved the result today, so we're happy.
Overall it has been a very good day for us. We managed to protect a few players as we look ahead to Wednesday night and the Youth Cup, so that was a real bonus for us as well.
If we can get Tom Aldred and Matt Wood fit for that one, then we'll be in good shape. We've drawn either Alfreton or Mansfield away in the next round, if we beat Stockport, so that is a bit of a journey either way. Alfreton is the Sheffield area and Mansfield is around the Nottingham area, so we've got ourselves a trek if we can get the result. Mind you, we have to win on Wednesday first, so let's think about that later.
Matt Wood trained this morning, and he looked to OK, so we'll see how he does in the next few sessions before we get him back in the squad. Tom Aldred is fit, so we may well have them all available. We look forward to the cup games, so it should be a good one."
