ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR THE YOUTH
Eric Kinder gave us his reaction to the 4-0 Youth victory over Morecambe:
"I think the thing that I'm most pleased about is that this is our second 4-0 victory in a row.
The fact that we have kept two clean sheets is even better than the goals we have scored because, and I know this is the same thing as I said last week, but we have missed a whole host of chances at the other end. If we can start being more precise and more clinical in front of the opposition goal then there will come a time very soon when we are talking about a 10-0 victory ... we really are creating that amount of scoring opportunities.
It's fair to say that what we don't have at the moment is what you would term a natural goalscorer. We have lads who know where the net is, and we have lads who will work really hard to get in to good positions, but we don't have that player who can go for 89 minutes without doing much of anything, only to pop up and score two if the chances suddenly come to him.
At the moment, we seem to have to create lots of chances before we take one, and that's a slight concern. You won't always get openings, and you need to know that you are able to take the odd half chance, because it might be the only thing that comes your way in the whole game. We'll work on that though, and with the group that we have I'm sure it will come.
We started brightly in this one, and Gary Madine could have had us two up on his own within the first few minutes. We finally went ahead through Andy Cook, and it was good persistence from him because his frst shot was parried by the keeper.
Our second goal was a good one, with Gary Madine getting behind the defence and putting it away from a ball from midfield. It's always good to see goals like that because you ask your strikers to make these runs, and they do get the rewards if they make them.
We dominated the game really, and we could have been five or six ahead by half time. I told the lads to keep it going after the break, and the third goal was a pleasing one, because it came for Dan Wordsworth. I've mentioned on a couple of occasions just how much he has improved this season, and he had another excellent game today. I was pleased that he got his goal, because he deserved it. It came about when Gary Madine had a header tipped on to the bar, and he made the rebound his.
We finished with another good goal from Andy Cook just before full time, and it was a good way to finish, but I have stressed to the lads that they should not get complacent about this. On the surface, winning 4-0 in two consecutive games is more than you can ask for but, as I say, there's more to it than that. We can't allow ourselves to be happy about missing what are very, very good chances. We have to do something about that, or it will come back to haunt us.
One thing that I have been worried about for a while has been the injury situation, and how it may affect us. Matt Brown and Matthew Wood were missing today, and it means that you are concerned about what might happen if the injury list grows. We're a young side, and it is around this stage of the season that you start to find a few niggles creeping in. We'll have to try and manage that as well as we can, as there is nothing much that can be done about it.
A good thing to come from the link up with the Cumberland FA and Carlisle City is that we will take the young keeper Jamieson in to our set up. He will continue to train with his own coaches and within his own set up, but we'll also have him as cover for Alex Mitchell, which is fantastic. I hope the link up will prove to be beneficial all round, and it is certainly proving to be that way at the moment. I think I knew that the agreement to play the friendly could only be a good thing, so it's all turning out really well for all parties.
We've got some tough games coming up now, and we need to be working hard and looking to build on the last two results. It's a busy period, but we're looking forward to it."
