WE CAN DO BETTER
Eric Kinder gives his reaction to the 3-1 Youth victory over Rochdale:
"We scored three very good goals, and a 3-1 scoreline is terrific, but because we've now decided we are setting our standards a little bit higher, we were all a little bit disappointed in our overall play.
I think we can play far better.
I think we can pass it better, and I think we can move it better. What I said to the lads at the end of the game was, it's ok trying to play a passing game, but if you don't have players that are moving in to position then it will end up being a long ball game, because people are forced to play it longer. We didn't really move off the ball that well, so that meant that we went a little bit more direct than I want to. We played at a really slow pace compared to what we try to train at, so we'll work on that as well. We're being a bit picky, but if you don't set your standards high then you're not going to get better.
In the game itself, we scored first after about 7 minutes. In fact, I thought we should have had a penalty after two minutes, when Ged Dalton was brought down as he ran on to a through ball from Stephen, but the Referee didn't give it.
Our first goalscorer was Matthew Wood. He got on the end of a terrific ball from Matt Brown, timing his run well, then he took it round the keeper and put it away. It was a terrific goal from a midfielders point of view.
We were 2-0 up after 26 minutes when Stephen played Gary Madine through to beat the offside trap, and he hit it with his left foot and it smashed it in off the post. It was another excellent finish.
The first half got a little bit scrappy after that. There were plenty of fouls and free kicks, and Rochdale are bit of a spoiling side.
We started the second half a little bit slowly, and we never really got going, but always had control of the game, I felt. We got the third goal when Matthew Wood took a great corner, and they couldn't deal with the rebound at all. Dan Wordsworth was quickest to react and he headed it in.
Unfortunately for us our Achilles heel kicked in again, and we conceded from a corner. That's dampened the day really, because we set our stall our to win, to play well and not to concede a goal, especially from a set piece.
Overall I am being picky, but if we don't set our standards high, all of us, players and staff alike, we don't get better. So I'm a little bit disappointed with the goal, but that's two unbeaten and the seasons up and running for us now.
It was good to see Ged Dalton finally make his debut for the club, even though it is at Youth level. He hasn't played a full game yet and it's October, so he was understandably a bit stale, but he showed some flashes that tells me he's a very decent player. I took him off after about 76 minutes, simply because I didn't want him to pull any muscles when he was getting tired.
He's been out for so long that the last thing we want now is for him to pull a muscle and be out for another four weeks. Hopefully he can step up his fitness levels with a Reserve team outing, and I'll speak to the Gaffer after that game, to see if he wants him to have another run out with us next Saturday.
Jonny Blake got a bit of a knock on his ankle, but nothing that will keep him out of training next week. Ged's a bit stiff, but that's to be expected, so it's nothing that will cause us any worries for the Reserves on Wednesday.
Overall I think I would say that I'm pleased that we won ... but we can do much better."
