WE DESERVED SOMETHING
Dave Wilkes spoke to us about the 3-2 defeat at Preston on Saturday:
"We had enough chances to win the game in the second half, if we're honest. However, as we know, if you don't put them away then there's nothing that you can do.
We dominated the second half, and we were unlucky in the end.
They got themselves a couple of deflected goals in the first half, and we were always chasing it after that. But, if your luck is in then it's in, and that's the way it goes sometimes.
They scored from a corner after 10 minutes, and we can have no complaint about that, because we failed to clear it. They then went two up from a free kick that deflected wickedly off the wall, leaving the keeper stranded. Their third was a shot that spooned up off a boot and, again, it left the keeper on his heels and with no chance.
Andy Cook pulled one back just before half time, which put us in with a shout, when he went round the keeper and slotted it away.
Like I say, we came out and gave it everything in the second half. Steve Hindmarch had a couple of chances, we've had four one on one situations, and we've had a couple of other fantastic chances to get something. It's just a case that if you don't take those chances then you don't win games.
We showed a lot of character, and we showed that we can play the game, so there is plenty to build on.
We played 3 in midfield for the first half, and we changed that to 4-4-2 for the second half, and the lads coped well with the change in approach. I had to bring Woody off at the break, because he took a bad knock, and I gave Shaun Law a run out for the last 15 minutes, and he did very well.
Connor Tinnion scored our second from a corner, in the 64th minute, when he was first to react to a poor clearance. He struck it well and buried it in the bottom corner, and that really gave us the momentum. They only had one chance after that, and it was all about whether we could go on and get something from it.
I'm very pleased with it overall. To concede two goals in the way we did, there's nothing much that can be done about it, especially with deflections like that. It was bad enough for the first one, but when it happened the second time you do start to wonder what sort of day it is going to be. As I said to the lads, you have to take those kinds of incidents on the chin and get on with it.
We definitely deserved something from it, and I can't fault the way we fought back. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal."
