JEKYLL AND HYDE
United Head of Youth Eric Kinder spoke to us yesterday about the 2-2 draw with Accrington Stanley:
"It was a real Jekyll and Hyde performance, it really was.
We were very, very good in the first half, and I was pleased with what we were doing. Our tempo was there, we were looking for each other and we were playing some nice stuff.
We created numerous chances to score, and we could really have had the game out of sight.
Matt Wood scored from the edge of the area to put us ahead, and I was delighted with that. He burst forward, got himself to about 19 or 20 yards out and put it away. He capitalised on a mistake that they made for his second one, and we have then had two or three cleared off the line, some decent shots that went close, and we have looked very good for the lead.
Everything that we had been doing right in the first half, we did wrong in the second. Suddenly we were second best all over the pitch. We just didn't come out and play after the break at all.
If I'm going to be honest, we were very lucky to come away with a draw.
We struggled with every set piece that they sent over, and I was really disappointed with the way we approached that second 45 minutes.
When you have a first half like that, and then follow it with a second half in the way that we did, then it tells you a few things about your team. Some of them really need to have a look at themselves and where it is they want to take this opportunity. When the going got tough, we had two or three lads who simply didn't fancy it. That is a real worry for me.
You can have a lot of bad days in football, and you have to stand up and be strong. The good thing is that they are young players, and I think they will learn from it.
It has still been a decent start to the season for us, but what we have to remember is that this is the first point that Accrington Stanley have gained in Youth football. We will now always be known as the team who allowed that to happen. If I was a player, that would hurt me badly. I warned them about it before the game, and I told them not to let it happen. There's nothing that we can do about it now, but it will be interesting to see how they react.
I've been very careful with how I give praise in my half time team talks, because it can come back and smack you in the face if you aren't careful. That is what has happened in this one.
From the first half, I'd say that Jonny Blake was absolutely tremendous. They couldn't deal with Steven Hindmarch at all, and our defence was really strong as a unit. In the second half, Jonny was by far our best player on the pitch, and he should take a pat on the back for that, because he is looking like a good player.
Woody has got himself two goals, and that is two more than he got all last season, so that's a big plus for him. He's been working hard on getting forward and shooting, and it's nice to see him do it in a game.
We'll take the positives, and we'll work on them this week so that we're ready to pick up and move on.
There are no excuses for the performance, because I don't make excuses, but it was like a wind bowl once more for the game. It's amazing, because you travel along the M6 and the trees aren't moving, but as soon as you get to Penrith it seems to pick up like Hurricane Hilda. You just don't expect it to be as windy as that at the end of August. The facilities at Frenchfields are first class, but it does tend to be blustery, and that doesn't really help the way that you want to play. There are no excuses for that second half, though, none at all. We were just poor.
Like I say, we'll work hard again this week, because we have to get away from switching off during games. The fact is, you could watch that game and you would think that the second half line up was completely different to the first half line up, because the perfromance was that far apart. They scored within two minutes of the start of the second half, and it was downhill from there for us. We were chasing our tails.
Having said that, John Seaton had a terrific chance at the back post, with a minute to go, and he somehow screwed it wide. Mind you, it would have been unfair on Accrington if we'd nicked it. I suppose you also have to consider that they have got themselves a much better group of players than they had last season, but it still hurts to give them their first point.
We're still unbeaten, however, and we'll be looking to improve and keep it that way from hear on in."
Team - Carson, Brown, Aldred, Wordsworth, Duffy, Hindmarch, Blake, Wood, Tinnion (Dowson 81), Cook (Seaton 60) , Madine. Subs - Mitchell, Law.
Eric added: "Shaun Law is one of our U16 lads who has been training with our U18s, simply because he has come in and done really well. He has impressed us, so he'll join us and become part of the U18 squad for the remainder of the season, to give him a flavour of what this kind of foootball is like, and to help to improve him further."
