PLEASED WITH THE WAY WE PLAYED
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the Reserve game at Accrington Stanley:
"Overall Gregg and the manager were highly delighted with the way we played. Had it been a first team fixture I think everyone would have been heart-broken about the result, but for a Reserve fixture I think we all went home relatively happy, because the performance was exceptional.
We had a fantastic start when Gary Madine scored after two minutes. He brought it under control with one touch and volleyed it in to the top corner, with the goalkeeper just off his line. For a lad of his age to be doing that at Reserve team level is terrific. It was an exceptional goal and after that we dominated the early stages of the game. The tempo was excellent and we played some really good stuff - but then we went and lost an equaliser to a 30 yard free kick.
We actually felt the award of the free kick was harsh in the first place, but these things happen, and then to make matters worse we had a very soft penalty given against us. James Krause was adjudged to have held one of the Accrington forwards in the area. To be honest I think there was only one person on the pitch that saw it, and that was the one that mattered so we found ourselves 2-1 down having dominated the game. Up to that point we'd made several chances, looked very good going forward and played at an excellent tempo, but then it got worse again because they got a third.
Adam Bradley did excellently to get down and block their first shot, the second was cleared off the line, but unfortunately it came back out to one of their lads who smashed it in through a ruck of players. It was one of those goals that, with a bit of luck, we might have got away with. To be fair to the lads, when we went in at half time we just said 'Don't worry about it' - and rightly so because we were playing very well. But these things happen, both Gregg and myself keep saying that at Reserve and Youth level it's not all about results and we were pleased with the way the team was playing. The young lads were terrific and, of course, Kevin Gray led by example as usual.
At half time Chris Lumsdon came off for Matthew Wood, and Derek Holmes came off for Matthew Brown. That was simply because they'd had their 45 minutes of football and they'll probably be needed for the Gillingham game on Saturday. Despite that we carried on where we'd left off - by dominating. The young lads up front, Madine and Hindmarch, gave Accrington problems every time they got the ball, and with about 15 minutes to go Stephen won us a penalty. He was brought down in the box and Neale McDermott stuck it away.

After that we continued to push for an equaliser and our best chance probably came in the last minute. Arne' will be a bit disappointed, because he's made a fantastic 50 yard run, and then tried to do the right thing by directing Matthew Wood's cross back across the face of the goalkeeper - but it went just wide. It was a shame really because it would only have been what the lads deserved."
United - Bradley, Arnison, Gray, Kirkup, Krause, Lumsdon (Brown), McDermott, Vipond, Madine, Hindmarch, Holmes (Wood).
