He went straight into the club's U18 side, impressing in his first two seasons at youth team level and playing an integral part in the side that made it to the 2007 FA Youth Cup final before eventually losing to arch-rivals Liverpool.

After signing his first professional contract, James made the step up to Reserve level and became a regular for the side in the 2007/08 season, wiht his performances on the pitch and attitude off it enough to convince the management team at Old Trafford to make him Reserve team captain the following season.

He continued to impress for the Reserves and was handed a first-team squad number. He was picked as an unused subtitute for a Premier League clash against Bolton Wanderers and a few days later made his first team debut, coming on for Gary Neville in the Carling Cup semi-final against Derby County at Old Trafford.

A month later, Chester teamed up with Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren at Peterborough United, signing a one-month loan deal with the Posh. He made five appearanes for the London Road based club before returning north to Manchester.

The start of the 2009/10 season saw Chester, along with fellow United team-mate David Gray, join Plymouth Argyle on a three-month loan deal. He made three appearances for the Pilgrims before an injury ruled him out for the rest of his spell at Home Park.

He joined up with the Blues for a trial game against Hibernian in the 2010 pre-season and impressed against the SPL side, convincing manager Greg Abbott to sign him up on a six-month loan deal.

On-loan from Manchester United until 3 January 2010.
