THOROUGHLY DESERVED
Eric Kinder gives us his thoughts on the Reserve win over Oldham today:
"I thought we started off very well, with a goal in the first minute. Gary Madine got on to Gary Rowntree's cross, and it came off the side of his head, and then his shoulder, but a goal's a goal, and we'll take that. He got himself in to the right place, at the right time, and he got his reward for it.
I thought we worked extremely hard today against a pretty decent side. The table shows that they have only lost one game, and they are obviously pushing to try and win the League, and you could see in their faces at the end that they were bitterly disappointed to lose it.
I thought we deserved to win simply because of our work rate. It's great to have a pro like Kevin Gray in the side, he makes a massive difference to the young players. He demands things of them, he demands respect, he gives it everything he's got himself. It's good to have him and Paul Arnison in a very, very young Reserve team. Even though Dan Kirkup and Like Joyce are professionals, they haven't been through what those two have been through. To see them two play Reserve team football like they did today was a credit to them, and it does help. It means they have to work just as hard or they know what they will get . Kevin won't suffer people who don't put a hard shift in.
So, overall, yes, they had a lot of possession and we could have had two or three ourselves, but I thought we thoroughly deserved it from our all round effort, and the young lads will take a lot out of it. They are very tired lads in the dressing room now, but they should be tired after playing a 90 minute game like that.
We had come off a bit of a battering at Preston, we are all professional people and we got knocked a bit at Preston. To come back and put in a performance like that, against the team who are at the top of the table, is all we can ask for. We need to keep it going now. The young lads have got to realise that every time they play football they have got to work hard, and if they have the ability then they will shine through. It's a good dressing room, even though it's Reserve team football, and both Gregg and myself have always said that both Reserve team football and Youth team football - the results don't matter. But when you are watching a side in the dressing room just before a match, and when you come in after you play, of course you want to win, because if you don't want to win you shouldn't be playing professional sport. You've got to learn to lose as well, but you have to win because that's what it's all about."
