hughRob caught up with Hugh McIlmoyle yesterday as, after every home game, the United legend takes time out to talk about what went on:

"I enjoyed the second half more than the first on Saturday.  The first half I felt both the team and the fans were a bit flat and it did look like we were never going to score.  The longer the game went on without scoring, the more frustrated players can become.  It was obvious how much the team relaxed once the first goal went in.  The fans too!  We deserved the win.

I thought Karl Hawley played exceptionally well - he held the ball up well and he has a good shot on him too.  I would like to see him shoot more.  Simon Hackney impressed me with his runs past the full back and he put in some decent crosses.  I feel that Paul Simpson has put together a good squad and he has strength in depth which is something we have lacked previously.  The back four are an excellent unit but there are players like Beharall, Andrews and Grand who can also slot straight in to the side.  Similarly in midfield with Simpson himself, McClen and Murphy who can also fit in and, of course, Murray and Nade up front.  This leads to competition for places and this can only be good for the club.  I like a big man up front as this gives the team different options but the downside can be that they just tend to hit the ball long to him.

Overall, I was impressed with the performance and pleased with the three points although I was disappointed that only just over five thousand turned out.  I was surprised when I found we have gone up to third in the table - there were a lot of draws yesterday.  On reflection, this is understandable as many team in this division are very similar - much of a muchness.  It means that we have to be patient in our play as teams will come to Brunton Park to close the game down and this means that our players are under pressure to score.  It is harder work to play at home than away because of the expectation - it is easier to defend than create - but the players should be able to cope with the pressure.

We fans have to be patient as well as the game lasts for ninety minutes and the first goal may not come until late on - just like on Saturday.  The players do feel the atmosphere that the fans generate and there are some games that are complete nothing games and you come off the pitch wondering what happened there?  Sometimes it just takes something different to turn a game - just like Hawley's goal on Saturday.

Prior to the match I was in the East Stand for the naming of the two bars and it was good to meet up with Allan and Chris' families again.  There was a lot of memorabilia around which brought back some happy times.  It is fitting that the Club has named parts of the ground after former heroes as it keeps the Club's high profile.  It's like the Fans Forums that are being held all over the place - fans want to be closely involved with the players, coaches, etc and it is good that time is being found for these Forums.  There is so much competition for people's attention these days and Carlisle United have to work hard to keep their name in front of the fans."

There'll be more from Hugh after the Leyton Orient game on 24 September.
