WILLIAMS THE HERO

Posted on: Sun 24 Jul 2005

Anthony WilliamsUnited are through to the final of the Isle of Man Tournament following an exciting 90 minutes of play and an enthralling penalty shoot out against League One side Port Vale.

The Vale scored from two set pieces, something that angered manager Paul Simpson, but United attacked well crafting two well taken goals of their own to take the tie to penalties.

Simmo said, "we'll have to work on tightening up at set pieces, I'm really not too impressed with that at all, but they are a good side and we definitely earned at least a draw with the way we played."

Hector Sam opened the scoring for Vale but Adam Murray was on hand to pull the scores level for a United side that don't like to lose these days.  Cummins restored the Port Vale lead but substitute Karl Hawley continued where he left off last season to make the final score 2-2.

In to the penalty shoot out and Anthony Williams made himself a Carlisle hero by saving the first three spot kicks and really piling the pressure on to the Potteries side.

Holmes and Hawley had made it 2-0 but Paul Arnison scuffed his shot, allowing Hector Sam to pull it back to 2-1.  Simon Hackney also missed his chance to seal the tie but Zigor Aranalde made no mistake, stepping up to blast his penalty in to the back of the net and claim the result for United.

Paul Simpson added, "I know it doesn't mean much for pre-season but it means we are unbeaten and there is a healthy will to win in the squad at the moment.  That can only be good for us.  We go on to the final now and we'll be looking to win that as well."

The only slight worry was that Kev Gray had to be replaced early in the first half as he complained of a slight tweak in a leg muscle, and the Carlisle management team decided not to mess about.

United: Williams, Beharall, Aranalde, Grand, Gray (Arnison), McGill (McClen), Murphy (Hackney), Murray (Billy), Simpson, Holmes, Nade (Hawley).
