FREEVIEW - GREG ABBOTT

Posted on: Sun 05 Feb 2012

United boss Greg Abbott spoke to us at full time on Saturday about the second half turnaround against Chesterfield.

He said: "We went out there to try and play football but it just didn't work for us before half time. We were trying to pass it short and keep it moving, but it didn't come off for us and we had to change it.

"Once we switched things a bit we started to create chances and we looked better, and we competed more. We hadn't really put their defence under pressure in the first half but we kept going and we got our reward for that.

"We haven't really learned anything new about the spirit in this group because they keep showing us that they want to win. We had words at half time about doing things better and we had a look at the personnel who we felt could get out there and win us a game. Credit to them, they responded and got their goals.

"I thought the substitutes did their job, came on and changed things for us. Andy Welsh was fantastic. He's had to wait but he's come on and given us something else to think about in terms of players who make a real impact. Paddy [Madden] is another who is really taking his chance and we need that, because we're going to need everyone as we go through a tough few months.

"Sometimes in this game you focus on the result, and when we look at the league table over the weekend we're all going to feel much happier than we felt at half time. We need to know that we can grind out results if we need to, and we've done that in this one.

"This was always going to be a tough game. The conditions were awful, even though we aren't going to use that as an excuse, and Chesterfield have been on a really good run. We needed to be patient and we thought the crowd were great, even though they were probably as frustrated as anybody with how it was going.

"I'm really pleased for Ben [Parker]. He admitted himself that it is going to take him a little bit of time to get back to playing the way he wants to play, but he isn't hiding and he's doing a job for us. He's scored on his home debut and that won't do him any harm at all. He's a really good player and we've told him he just needs to get out there and show people that quality.

"Francois [Zoko] is enjoying his game and getting his goals. He was another who responded in the second half and he got his reward for gambling on the back pass. There was still a lot for him to do but it was a good finish.

"Overall we have seen an indifferent performance before half time but we've looked at it and put it right. That's all you can ask. Chesterfield will feel aggrieved that they have gone away with nothing but we have to get results like this if we want to stay at the top end of things. With so many games off it was important that we kept the pressure on, and the three points have done that for us. We can look at getting back to work on Monday and getting ready for another big game at Stevenage with an important win under our belts."
