A HEALTHY RESPECT

Posted on: Sun 05 Sep 2010

United manager Greg Abbott gave us his reaction to the 0-0 draw with Swindon.

He said: "It was a good point.

"We had the better of the first half without quite managing to find that fluency and quality that we have been playing with. Last week I thought that we should have won the game, but this week they are leaving here and they are probably thinking the same.

"They had some good chances late in the game but sometimes when you show sheer honesty, hard work and guts you get what you deserve. We worked hard in that one so we'll take that point with brass knobs on.

"Danny [Wilson] changed his formation and showed us a bit of respect today. He has seen that we are doing well and he wanted to stop certain players from playing. That made it all very congested in midfield and we have to find a way of dealing with that. We didn't really manage that and our passing and ball retention was below what it can be.

"We had a high amount of crosses into the area and we haven't just turned up. We've tried to win the game but we struggled for quality and for an end product.

"We got the energy, commitment and work rate but this is a really young side and they are still learning. They have just found out that the game can be tough if you give the ball away too easily because you end up running after nothing.

"We made our changes with the substitutions because we felt that Robson could go up against Amankwaah, and we wanted Marshall to force things on a bit. We didn't manage to find the goal but the fans have applauded us off because I think they know they've seen another committed performance.

"Lubomir Michalik came in and he had only had one day of training with us. I think we've seen how dominant he can be and we can see where his strengths are. We've also seen what can hurt him when the ball goes in behind, but he rescued himself a couple of times and that comes down to experience.

"Overall we're happy because we got a very good point and we weren't at our best. We have to be fair and say that Swindon probably deserved the win, but it's the only time so far this season that has happened to us.

"If we keep this run going then we will probably see teams coming here looking for a point. That in itself is an improvement because we've been a bit of a soft touch in the last couple of seasons and teams have been coming here for all three. We're getting a healthy respect now, and we have to find a way of dealing with it if we do get stifled."
