GAFFER NOMINATED FOR AWARD

Posted on: Fri 03 Sep 2010

A highly exciting opening month of the new npower League 1 season has come to a close with the announcement of the nominees for the season's first Manager of the Month award.

The nominees for the August award are as follows:

Gary Johnson - Peterborough United
Alan Irvine - Sheffield Wednesday
Greg Abbott - Carlisle United
Paul Dickov - Oldham Athletic

Newly appointed Peterborough United Manager Gary Johnson is amongst the nominees after guiding his side to three wins out of four in August. Posh have been red hot in front of goal, hitting the back of the net eleven times during the month and picking up some impressive results in the process, including a 3-0 away victory against Plymouth Argyle.

Alan Irvine, boss of early league leaders Sheffield Wednesday, is also amongst the nominees after seeing his side enjoy an unbeaten start to the season and picking up 10 points out of a possible 12. The undoubted highlight of this fine form was the Owls' 5-0 away win at Hartlepool United. Wednesday have been equally as impressive at the back having conceded just one goal all month.

Another side who enjoyed a fine start to the season were Carlisle United, remaining unbeaten throughout August. This impressive form, including a 4-1 home win over Milton Keynes Dons, has seen Manager Greg Abbott also nominated for the season's first award.

Oldham Athletic boss Paul Dickov completes the month's line-up of nominees. The Scot has enjoyed a successful start to life as a Manager with his side remaining unbeaten in the League so far. A 3-0 victory at home to Notts County was the highlight of an impressive month for the Lancashire side.

Speaking after receiving the news of his nomination, Abbott said: "I'm delighted to receive the nomination but in truth, it's really recognition for the work done by the coaching staff and players at the club over the last couple of months.

"There's some really tough competition for the award but we can all be pleased that we've been recognised in this way."

The winner of the award will be announced on Thursday 9th September and presented with the new npower Manager of the Month trophy.
