United captain Paul Thirlwell spoke to the press shortly after his dramatic late goal had earned United a point in Colchester on Friday night.
He said: "The good thing about that game, apart from the goal, was the fact that we all knew that we hadn't performed in the first half and we went out to do something about it after the break.
"They couldn't handle us in the second half and that's pleasing because we would possibly have folded in the past in similar situations.
"We kept going and the goal was one where you just hope the ball will go to one our players. It was a bit messy but it came to me and I put my left foot through it. I was just happy to see it go in.
"Peter Murphy is taking the mickey out of himself in the dressing because he had wound up to do a long throw and it slipped out of his hands. I think it went about three yards in front of him in the end.
"Graham Kavanagh reacted quickly to that to get to it first and he put the ball into the box. I think Frank Simek scuffed a shot, and then it started pinging about. You'll have seen from my celebration how happy I was to see it go in.
"I was particularly pleased because a few of us felt that we should have done better from the cross that led to their goal. Their lad got free to make the delivery and I would normally have got a block in on that, but he did whip it in really quickly.
"It's one that you can't really do anything about, but we were disappointed with it. I'm just pleased with the way that we responded as a group and we got our reward in the end.
"The performance in the first half was not up to the standard that we have set ourselves this season. We said at half time that we were going to take the game to them and that's exactly what we did.
"We created some really good chances and when you see them come back off the bar or get saved you do start to wonder. Like I say, we kept going and I think the point was the least that we deserved.
"We have another tough one against Swindon next weekend but if we can keep doing what we're doing then teams are going to have to worry about us. It's been a great start and we just want that to continue."
