GREAT SPIRIT AROUND THE SQUAD

Posted on: Thu 26 Aug 2010

Defender Frank Simek put in another good performance to help United on their way to a 4-1 win over MK Dons at the weekend. We caught up with him after the game to get his reaction.

He said: "It's been a great start to the season and Saturday's performance just summed up the great spirit around the squad.

"We didn't start the game very well and if anything they were probably the stronger side early on. But they didn't have too many chances and we defended really well as a team.

"Looking back, we probably played better in the last few games but that's the sign of a good side when you can win comfortably despite not being quite at your best.

"We got a bit of luck too early on when Adam made a huge save from Jermaine Easter at 0-0. If that had gone in then things could have been very different.

"I think everyone can see that things changed after the incident between Hartey and Easter. It was a bit of a wake-up call and it lifted the crowd which got us on our toes.

"It was a great finish from Francois. He's taken a couple of games to settle but he really came to life today. He was a handful for them all game and I'm sure he'll cause problems for most teams in this division over the season. The fact that they changed their right-back in the second-half because of the problems he was causing is a real compliment to just how good he was.

"Getting the second before half-time was huge as it really hit their confidence. I was always going to look to pick out Gary in the box. He's a real monster in the air and if you put anything within 5 yards of him he's either going to win it or make it very difficult for the centre-back to get something on it. The goal was more his making than mine, it was a great flick on and James has gambled on it and got his reward with a goal.

"We had been sloppy at times in the first half and the gaffer let us know that at the break. But he was pleased with the fact that we never gave up and kept going. He made it clear he wanted us to carry that on into the second half and we did that.

"Things looked pretty comfortable at 4-0 so to concede one was a bit disappointing, probably more so for Adam and the back four because we want to keep as many clean sheets as possible. But when you look at the league table, I think we'll all take a 4-1 scoreline!

"It's going to be a tough game on Friday night as it's not an easy place to go. They've got a really good home record and will be a tough side but we don't have any fear at the moment.

"I'm just loving playing football at the moment after so long without a run of games. I can't wait for each match to come so if I'm honest, the long journey next week really doesn't bother me at all!"
