IMPORTANT TO KEEP FOCUSED

Posted on: Mon 09 Aug 2010

United defender Sean McDaid spoke to us after making his debut for the club in the 2-0 win over Brentford at the weekend.

He said: "It was a good win for us this afternoon and just the kind of start we hoped for.

"Everyone wants to start the season with a win, particularly when you're at home and we've managed that pretty comfortably in the end with two goals and a clean sheet.

"We said in the build up to the game that we'd had a fairly decent pre-season but that would mean nothing if we didn't do the business against Brentford. We've managed that and it's now up to us to get a good run of form going.

"We've played the diamond formation a few times in pre-season now but we also played another formation in the win against Hibs last week. It worked a treat this afternoon but we know we can also play other formations and styles, which can only be a good thing.

"I'm pretty pleased with my own debut and especially with the part I played in the goals. We've been practicing getting crosses in early as we know Gary and Craig can be a big threat from them. I suppose the Brentford defence could have done a bit better with the cross for the first goal but Gary's done well to get on the end of it and finish it off.

"Getting a second goal before half-time was a big boost as well. There's never much doubt when Hartey steps up for a penalty, he's got probably the best left-foot in the division and is going to be another big threat on set-pieces this season.

"The gaffer was really positive at half-time and told us to keep doing what we'd been doing well in the first-half. We knew that they would change things a bit in the second-half so it was important to keep focused and we managed to do that.

"We always knew they had some really good forwards so to keep a clean sheet was very pleasing. It's almost an entirely new back four and Adam Collin has only had maybe one save to make. He showed his focus in making that stop despite having so little to do. It was a good start and the more we play together the better we'll get.

"We're all glad it's only a few days until the next game as we all desperately want to get a good run going. It's a great cup competition that we want to do well in again this season.

"Huddersfield had a good result at Notts County too and it should be a decent game against them. The pitch is in excellent condition and both sides will hopefully go out looking to play some decent stuff."
