HEADING INTO THE FINAL WEEK

Posted on: Fri 30 Jul 2010

United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us about the game at Falkirk and the friendly against Hibernian on Sunday.

He said: "We knew that Falkirk would provide us with a very stern test and that's exactly how it turned out.

"We had to work hard both with and without the ball, and it was a game that has really helped us as we look for match sharpness and fitness.

"I thought that we controlled it for long periods of the first half and we probably felt that we should have been ahead at the break. They started brightly but we settled and we were creating some decent openings.

"Obviously we were disappointed in the way that we went behind, but that gave us another test to see if we could bounce back from it.

"I thought that we dug deep and we kept trying to pass the ball, and we got our reward in the end.

"Andy Cook has that ability. It was a good finish and hopefully he will take confidence from that and really start to make an impression.

"Overall I thought that it was a really enjoyable game. It was exactly the kind of game that you want at this stage of pre-season and we would like to thank Steven Pressley and all of the staff at the Falkirk Stadium for making us feel so welcome.

"We now have another tough fixture coming up against Hibs on Sunday. Again, the message to the players is to go out there and do it properly.

"There is no question over fitness levels now and it is all about making sure that we are up to speed and putting the things that we have talked about into practice.

"They will come here wanting to get things right after their result on Thursday night, so we'll have to be on our game.

"Again, it is the type of opposition that we would want to come up against as we head into our final week of preparation. We're expecting it to be a good game, and the indications are that they are bringing quite a few fans, and that will add to the competitive feel."
