TONY CAIG FREEVIEW - PART 1

Posted on: Wed 21 Jul 2010

United goalkeeping coach Tony Caig has been in the game for over 20 years now and we took the opportunity recently to speak to him about his career so far.

He said: "To be honest in some ways it doesn't feel like I've been in the professional game for twenty years now as a lot of things are the same as they were.

"But on the other hand, the game also moved on a lot and training and preperation especially are a lot more science based these days.

"I remember my debut back in 1992. I was actually due to play for the youth team that morning and arrived ready to play at the Sheepmount at 11am, only to get told I wasn't playing as I was needed for the first team game against Halifax that afternoon! I headed straight to the ground and once I got here it was a case of get changed and ready to go.

"It took a while for me to establish myself in the first team as I had two good goalkeepers ahead of me in Tony Elliot and Mervyn Day but I was only 18 at the time so it wasn't such an issue. They both picked up injuries and it was a case of taking my chance which I did in 1993-94 and we went on a great run to make the play-offs. I was then lucky enough to play almost every game in that title winning side of 1994-95 which was a brilliant experience.

"The icing on the cake that year was of course the club's first ever visit to Wembley. We probably created more clear cut chances during the game than Birmingham City did but once we got to extra time we were out-done by the Golden Goal. Despite that I think we were definitely a better team for the experience.

"I suppose big things were expected the following season but there was a lot of upheaval with Mick leaving to go to Norwich City. Mervyn came in and changed things a bit with playing three at the back and it took us a while to get used to it. Unfortunately we went down and after doing so well the previous season that was a big disappointment.

"The next season was a big improvement and winning promotion again was very pleasing. Again though, the high point was Wembley and with quite a few of the lads having played there two years earlier, it was a great opportunity for us to put things right and win this time.

"Penalty shoot-outs are always good for a goalkeeper as there's no pressure on you so I actually enjoyed the occasion. It's funny how people think I have a reputation for saving penalties based on that game as I actually didn't save a single penalty at Brunton Park during my first spell at the club!

"Losing Mervyn early on the following season was a big blow. I actually found out from our goalkeeping coach at the time Simon Smith who rang me to say he wasn't going to be coming in to training that day as Mervyn had been sacked. I put on Radio Cumbria and couldn't believe was I was hearing, it seemed such a hasty decision after six games.

"Mr Knighton then decided to take over as manager which was his prerogative as owner of the club but it was a very unusual time as a player. We'd go to other clubs and face up against players we knew and they'd be asking us 'What's all that about, the Chairman being manager?' but we were professionals and just had to get on with it."

Part one of the video interview with Tony will be available to United Player subscribers tomorrow. A freeview clip can be viewed at the top of the page in which Tony talks about playing in that 94-95 title winning side.
