TRIALIST DECISIONS MADE

Posted on: Sat 17 Jul 2010

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott and his backroom staff have made what they described as 'some difficult decisions' as they decided to allow three of their trial players to leave Brunton Park following the Newcastle United friendly game today.

Irish-born midfielder Patrick Cregg, former-Watford midfielder Billy Gibson and former-Owls defender Nick Wood have all been thanked for their efforts but will not return following their stays with the club.

Abbott said: "We have had to make some difficult decisions today, because some of these lads have been with us for a couple of weeks now.

"They have all done really well, but it is time for us to start to work with and concentrate on the first team squad as we head towards the start of the season. These lads are all good players, which is why this has been tough, but we have had to let them go with that in mind."

It was good news though for 26-year-old Ivory Coast striker Francoise Zoko who has been invited along to the club's pre-season training camp in Leicester for an extended trial period.

Zoko, an U23 international, has caught the eye in his friendly appearances so far and received a prolonged round of applause when he left the pitch after the 3-0 defeat at home to the Magpies on Saturday afternoon.

Abbott explained: "We feel that Francoise may have something a little bit different so we are going to take a longer look. He'll come with us next week where we will get to know him even better, and we may be able to take another look at him when we play Darlington on Friday."

Meanwhile Irish duo Craig Walsh and Gary Shaw will rejoin the Cumbrians for a further trial spell the week after next when the squad returns from it's pre-season trip away.

On Black Cat defender Jean-Yves M'Voto, the manager said: "Jean enjoyed himself this afternoon and I think he liked what he saw.

"He played really well, particularly in the first half, and he has now gone away to talk to his people and come to a decision on whether or not he would like to talk with us further. We expect to hear back from him either tomorrow or first thing on Monday morning."
