BACKROOM STAFF RESTRUCTURED

Posted on: Mon 10 May 2010

United manager Greg Abbott has today announced the make-up of his backroom staff for the 2010/11 season.

The main change will see current player-coach Graham Kavanagh make the move into the assistant manager post, with Dennis Booth stepping into a new role as Head of Football Affairs.

Abbott explained: "Dennis will help us to oversee all of the football areas within the club.

"He will watch the football that is played at all levels, from the first team through to the Youth team and the Centre of Excellence, and he will offer advice on everything that he sees.

"He will assist with the scouting network that we have, and he will be out there looking at targets in terms of player recruitment. He will also watch and produce match reports on our opponents in conjunction with the scouts who are already out there.

"With the wealth of knowledge that he has, he will be able to watch and advise on a wide variety of areas for us, and we feel that it is a role that could be very productive.

"That will then free up Graham [Kavanagh] and myself to concentrate fully on first team affairs. Kav will have much more to do in terms of training sessions and direct contact with the players and, contrary to recent reports, he will also be registered as a player and available to use on the pitch if we decide that he is needed.

"Obviously the role of assistant brings extra repsonsibilities, and he will also be heavily involved in player recruitment and in dealing with the day-to-day administration that goes hand-in-hand with running a first team squad."

The Carlisle boss is also hopeful of completing negotiations with first team keeper coach Tony Caig and his current club Workington Reds that will bring him back into Brunton Park on a full time basis.

He said: "We are still in the early stages of talks but Darren Edmondson and Workington are aware of what we would like to do.

"If a suitable package can be put together for Tony then that will happen, and it would also involve him registering as a player as well as carrying out full time coaching duties. Along with Adam Collin and Mark Gillespie that would give us three keepers and a bit of strength in depth in that position.

"Eric Kinder will remain as my Youth team coach and, along with David Wilkes, they will be in charge of the Youth Development side of the club.

"Neil Dalton will continue as our first team physiotherapist, with cover of Youth and other fixtures provided by Geoff Haugh.

"My kit manager will be Andy Hall, and he will deal with the management, accounting and ordering of playing kit and equipment. Along with club secretary Sarah McKnight he will also be responsible for the registering of player squad numbers and the booking of training facilities and travel arrangements as required.

"Colin Nixon will be our kit man, and he will deal wih the everyday needs in terms of kit and equipment through all levels of football at the club, home and away.

"I have been delighted with the work that has been put in this season by all of my backroom staff, and we feel that these changes will help us as we look to improve further and take the club forward and into next season."
