CARLISLE UNITED 1 (Madine 68) OLDHAM ATHLETIC 2 (Guy 55, Stephens 64) FT
United - Collin, Keogh, Raven, Harte, Horwood, Bridge-Wilkinson (Bowman 69), Taiwo, Clayton, Thirlwell (Dobie 56), Marshall, Madine. Subs - Pidgeley, Livesey, Kavanagh, Rothery, Kane.
Oldham - Flahavan, Hazell, Whitaker, Smalley, Abbott (Eaves 79), Guy (Worthington 79), Furman, Gregan, Lee, Stephens, Marrow (Black 38). Subs - Brill, Aljofree, Worthington, Brooke, Millar, Eaves.
1657 - Apart from a few moments, a pretty dull game all round won thanks to a few defensive lapses from United gifting Oldham goals. Neither side played particularly well but it's the Latics who go home with the three points. Next up for United is the long trip to Southampton, before the final home game of the season against Walsall two weeks today. I'll be back with another min by min report that afternoon so join me then.
FULL-TIME - Carlisle United 1 Oldham Athletic 2
90+2 min - Good pass out wide by Clayton finds Marshall, who cuts inside from the left and sends in a cross that's over everyone and out for a goal kick. Not United's day.
90 min - Good flick down from Bowman finds Dobie whose half volley is deflected behind for a corner on the right. Clayton's corner into a packed 18-yard box is headed away by a defender. We're going to have a minimum of four minutes added time.
84 min - Smalley goes down with "cramp" after losing possession in the United half but as is their right, United carry on playing. A long ball from Marshall finds Dobie miles onside but instead of advancing with the ball, he tries a first time shot which he hammers wide of goal. Should have done better with that one, it's almost like he was expecting to be flagged offside.
82 min - Trip on Madine by Furman gives United a free-kick about 10-15 yards inside the Oldham half. Harte steps up and lofts a cross trying to find Bowman but Black does well to head it away under pressure.
80 min - First booking of the afternoon goes to Dean Furman after hauling down Marshall on the left.
79 min - Oldham make a double change, with Pawel Abbott and Lewis Guy with Tom Eaves and Jon Worthington coming on in their place.
77 min - That's some great patient football from United which eventually sees Keogh played in by Clayton and his low cross beats Flahavan but Gregan stretchs to clear for a corner with Madine waiting to pounce. The corner from Clayton isn't the best and is easily cleared by the Latics defence.
71 min - Actually, Dobie hasn't moved out to the right-wing permanently, was just there at the time of that last move. Bowman is very much playing as the right-winger.
70 min - Dobie, who is now out on the right-wing, does well to force a corner off Hazell. Clayton sends the ball in and it's bobbling about but ends up with Keogh on the left-wing, who is forced to play it back to Horwood and the move peters out.
69 min - United make their second change, with Ryan Bowman coming on for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson.
68 min GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Oldham Athletic 2 - Finally, Darryl Flahavan is forced to make a save! A good long ball from Harte sees Dobie leave it for Madine, who does well to scoop a volley that Flavhan tips over the bar. From the corner, Clayton finds Madine, who heads into the bottom corner to get United back in the game.
64 min - GOAL! Carlisle United 0 Oldham Athletic 2 - United switch off at the back again and are punished for it. Smalley does well to beat the offside trap and is clean through on goal but Keogh comes across and does well to force him wide. The Oldham man still somehow manages to dig out a low cross though that Collin dives to block but seems unsighted and it falls straight to Dale Stephens, who hammers it into the empty net.
62 min - MBW plays Keogh in down the right, who gets into the area and then appears to be tripped, the ref points... for a goal kick. A few fans seemed to think that a pen had been given. Touch and go, maybe Richard made a little bit too much of it but I don't think Black got anywhere near the ball.
57 min - Chance for Marshall who manages to stay onside but he delays too much and after twisting and turning, Gregan is eventually able to boot it clear.
56 min - United were waiting to make a change and the goal has given them the chance, with Scott Dobie coming on for Paul Thirlwell.
55 min - GOAL! Carlisle United 0 Oldham Athletic 1 - Out of the blue, we've got the opening goal and it's not great defending from United. Clayton loses possession deep in the Oldham half and Horwood is caught up field after waiting for a pass that never came. Smalley is able to run the length of the field almost before actually miscontrolling the ball just inside the United area but it turns out to be a perfect pass for Lewis Guy to poke past Adam Collin. Don't think Collin could have done much else there as he would have ended up bringing down Guy.
52 min - The second corner is taken again by Stephens but this time a flick from an Oldham player trickles along the ground to Collin. That stop from Abbott's shot was the first save Collin has had to make all afternoon. Might even be the first either keeper has had to. To be honest, there's been so little action I can't even remember if it is!
51 min - Now Oldham have a chance up the other end as Abbott tries a low shot from 25 yards that Collin does well to tip around the post for a corner. Stephens corner finds Whitaker in acres of space on the edge of the box but his shot is well blocked by Keogh.
50 min - Nearly a big mess-up there by Black as he tried to shadow the ball out but MBW did superbly to keep it in but his attempt to find Madine is well intercepted by Hazell.
48 min - Today's attendance is 4,884.
47 min - Early corner for Oldham after Keogh is forced to put the ball behind on the Latics left. Stephens goes over and takes a right-footed outswinger but it's a shocker that goes well over everyone and out for a goal kick on the far side.
1606 - Both teams now back out and it looks like there's no changes for either side. Oldham get the second half underway, with United now attacking the Waterworks End.
1550 - Fair to say that wasn't a classic first half as both sides struggled to break through two mostly solid looking defences. Decent performances from both Marshall and Raven. Hopefully there'll be a few more things to write about in the second half. Back soon for more "action"(!)
HALF-TIME - Carlisle United 0 Oldham Athletic 0
45+2 min - Keogh tries to play an offside trap on the right but is out done by Guy who stays onside but his cross is poor and cleared by Harte.
45+1 min - Very nearly the opening goal for Oldham as Lewis Guy, who has been pretty anonymous so far, gets to the byline and hits a very inviting low cross that is going to Abbott at the far post but Raven does superbly to scoop out a clearance that Keogh then boots to safety. Abbott would have had an open goal there had Raven not stopped it.
45 min - Fourth official has indicated there will be a minimum of two minutes added time at the end of the first-half.
44 min - Marshall is playing a bit of a free role right now and he's just popped up on the right and won a corner. Clayton takes a right-footed outswinger that finds Harte but he doens't quite time his jump right and it goes over his head and out to the left wing.
41 min - Shocker of a pass there by Raven gifts possession to Oldham and Abbott plays a good first time ball down the left for Black to chase, but he takes his eye off the ball and it bobbles over his foot and out for a throw-in. Great opening wasted by the visitors there.
39 min - Marshall is blatantly bundled over on the right-wing but the ref waves play on and United eventually get a throw-in. Marshall lets the ref know what he thinks of that decision and ref Mr McDermid has a quiet word with him rather than booking him for his protests.
38 min - Oldham making their first change as Alex Marrow has failed to shake off the injury from that tackle with Thirlwell and he's replaced by Paul Black. Bit of a change around at the back as a result, with Keiron Lee switching to right-back and Black going to left-back.
37 min - Bit of controversy here as Clayton is flagged offside by the linesman but the referee (correctly, from our view up here) overrules the decision and Clayton skips through but is thwarted by Flahavan who dives on the ball. Dave Penney is furious and halfway down the touchline to complain at the linesman and Gregan is giving the ref his opinion on it too.
36 min - Free-kick to United about ten yards inside the Oldham half after a foul on Madine. Harte knocks it long looking for Keogh who appears to be knocked to the ground by Kieron Lee, but the appeals are half-hearted. You don't see them given very often.
32 min - Again, there's not a lot happening! United just had a half decent attack down the left but Marshall's cut back from the byline didn't find Clayton and was cleared by Hazell. That has allowed the Oldham physio on to give some treatment to Alex Marrow after a slightly late tackle by Thirlwell that teh ref allowed to go by without giving a free-kick.
26 min - Spoke too soon... Horwood receives a real hospital ball (not sure who off as I was typing the last update) and Oldham's Deane Smalley nicks in to steal the ball. He advances on goal but it's Harte who gets across and puts in a great block on Smalley's shot, which cannons back off the Oldham man and behind for a goal kick.
25 min - Still not much happening. United dominating possession but Oldham staying strong at the back.
20 min - There's very much an "end of season" feel to the game so far. Neither side looking too worried at the back and not threatening too much going forward. Hopefully it'll pick up soon!
17 min - Good play by Madine to win the ball deep in the Oldham half and set Marshall away down the left-wing, who in turn wins a corner. Clayton whips a dangerous ball into the six-yard box that Flahavan does well to punch away through a crowd of players, with an Oldham defender then completing the clearance into the United half.
13 min - After a bright start the game has petered out a bit as both sides struggle to hold onto the ball and start giving away needless free-kicks. That said, Madine was almost in there after a good run that was spotted by Clayton but he's flagged offside.
9 min - Long punt forward by Abbott (Pawel, not Greg!) sees Horwood try to head back to Collin but put too much on it and it's a corner to Oldham. Stephens goes over and lofts one into the middle that's headed out as far as Whitaker, who scuffs his shot straight at Thirlwell, who is able to clear towards the halfway line.
7 min - Oldham's captain today is former Darlington and Preston midfielder Sean Gregan. He's at centre-back by trade these days and carrying a bit more "bulk" shall we say but is still a very experienced campaigner. Should be a good test for Gary Madine this afternoon.
4 min - As if having a bright flourescent yellow outfield kit wasn't bad enough, Oldham are complementing it with... a bright orange flourescent goalkeeper kit!
3 min - Plenty happening in the first few minutes as Oldham on their first attack now have their first corner. Dale Stephens takes a right-footed inswinger from the left that finds Pawel Abbott but he heads well over the bar after pressure from Collin.
2 min - Good play by Marshall down the left who sets Horwood away towards the byline. His low cross to the near post is left by two defenders though after a good shout from Oldham keeper Darryl Flahavan.
1 min - Corner to United after just 10 seconds after a long punt from the kick-off is put behind by an Oldham defender under pressure from Madine. Clayton goes over and sends in a right-footed outswinger that goes high and finds Raven who tries to poke it back to Taiwo but he's stretching for the ball and Oldham are able to clear.
1502 - United are going to be kicking off this afternoon and unusually, will be kicking towards the Warwick Road End in the first-half. MBW and Tom Taiwo get us underway!
1500 - Oldham's mascot Chaddy The Owl is up to his tricks again - having a go at the groundsman's job with the pitch fork! At least he's left his BMX at home this season. Oldham are wearing the same away strip as last season - what can only be described as flourescent yellow!
1458 - Mathematics fans of the world - three points today and United are officially safe! Might even get Dunno to belt out Half Man Half Biscuit's tune "Mathematically Safe" if we do! Teams now coming out to One Step Beyond, usual handshakes taking place before we get underway.
1455 - Great to see Ravo back in action again after a torrid season inury wise for him. Unlucky for Tom Aldred though, who has been excellent since making his full debut a few weeks ago.
1451 - Just the one change for visitors Oldham Athletic, with Joe Colbeck dropping out of the matchday eighteen and his place being taken by Deane Smalley.
1447 - Two changes to the United side this afternoon from the side that went down to a 3-1 defeat to Leeds on Tuesday night. Coming in for starts are Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and David Raven, with Scott Dobie dropping to the bench and Tom Aldred out with a groin injury. Looking at the way they were warming up, it appears Raven for Aldred is a straight swap at centre-back and Keogh will continue at right-back. At a guess, MBW will take Dobie's place as the right forward in a front three, unless Clayton is put out wide? We'll find out soon anyway!
1441 - Afternoon everyone and welcome to today's minute by minute report from a sun-drenched Brunton Park for United's League One fixture against Oldham Athletic. Team news is in and can be found at the top of the page as usual.
