United manager Greg Abbott spoke to the press on Monday morning about the pending visit of Yeovil Town.
He said: "With the performance on Saturday we have now proved that we can compete with the biggest and the best.
"We have beaten Leeds, Norwich and teams like that, and now also Colchester who play a different style of football, and we have competed with them. We're not a million miles away from where we want to be and what we now want to do is continue to build and try to put ourselves up into that top echelon of this division.
"We wanted it to be an exciting season and we think we've honoured that. There's still plenty of twists and turns to come in what's left of the season and that's a good thing, I think.
"I don't really look back at the game with Yeovil down at their place too much. Once you start thinking that way you can come unstuck. I would like to show everybody that we have improved since that game, because our first half down there was poor.
"We didn't get the shape of the back four right following the injury to David Raven, but we think we've done that now. We can look forward to a game against a team who are around the same place as us in the table, and we will be going into it to get a victory. But that's the same for every game.
"Both sides want to try and play football and get the ball down, so it should be a very good game to watch. We have been up against Colchester who I think are the toughest side in the league, and the visit of Yeovil should be a different kind of test. We need to work hard and find some more of the quality that we know we have, and we will then start to find more of the consistency that we all want.
"We know how Yeovil play and we know what we will have to do to stop that. They have also improved since that day down in Yeovil and Terry Skiverton has got them playing really well, so it should be a good test all round.
"I thought the fans were excellent on Saturday and it was good to see everyone united. We know that they want to see a certain type of football and a certain end result, and we are working hard to achieve that. We went on to produce a performance of real character and if people know that they can come to see that type of game then the gates will only improve. I do think that the financial situation is one that we need to consider and the shortage of money is a big factor in the drop in crowds. Let's hope that everyone recovers and we get the gates back up to where we need them, around the 6 or 7,000 mark, and that will be of benefit to everyone.
"If we can beat Yeovil on Tuesday night then we can really start to enjoy this stage of the season. We want to try and get to our first target of 50 points quickly and then we can start to think about 60 and 65 points. That will show real signs of improvement and that's what we are looking for. You can start to look at other things if you get there because people are playing under less stress and strain. Every game has almost been a pressure situation over the last 18 months or so, and we'd like to ease a bit of that."
