TRIED TO PASS THE BALL

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

Manager Greg Abbott spoke to us after the Millwall game on Tuesday night.

He said: "We've given away two soft goals and we've made life hard for ourselves.

"Our football box-to-box was alright and I thought that we played better than we did on Saturday. We tried to pass the ball, but we've given two bad goals away and we're all a bit upset at the moment.

"It's an uphill battle because we knew that we didn't have a massive amount of goals in the team. We have a lack of striking options and with natural goal scorers they would have had a field day with the amount of balls that we got into the box.

"Scott Dobie did brilliant for us tonight because he picked up a groin injury after 5 minutes but he carried on trying to do a job for us. Every injury that we get at the moment seems to be to our strikers and it's taken us down to the bare bones. We're trying to pull rabbits out of the hat, but it isn't happening for us. We'll keep trying and hopefully we will get somewhere with it.

"I think that if we'd got the first goal in the second half then we'd have won the game, because our football was alright at times. It's the striker position that is or problem because of the injuries, and it is making it hard work for us.

"It was a tough game and it was typical League One football. Maybe their keeper was lucky to get away with what he did because we have seen sendings off for miles less than that. We don't want people sent off, but from where I am it looked like he had broken the rules, but there's nothing we can do about it.

"We might have to look at whether we can do something to bring a striker in because it's an area that concerns us at the moment. Richard Offiong has had 25 minutes and not everything came off for him, and we have to hope that he can show us what he can do. We've told him that he has to work harder than he has been, and if he does that he'll start to get the rewards.

"We hope that Scott Dobie will be fit for Saturday because we need him. He has the heart of a lion and he would have carried on, but we have to look after him.

"I feel sorry for the players because they have had a go. They've made mistakes, we know that, but there was a determination there and we have to be encouraged by that."
