NO DOUBT IT WILL BE TOUGH

Posted on: Sun 27 Dec 2009

Manager Greg Abbott spoke to us ahead of the Sunday morning festive period training session.

He said: "The lads were looking in good shape and the results were going for us prior to these games being called off, so we just want some more football now.

"Hopefully Tranmere will be ok and we will get some pitch time under our belts. Then, if the weather warms up, we can get some grass to train on the in the week after that and we can get out there and do some heavier work.

"It's always difficult to prepare when the weather is like this but we aren't going to use it as an excuse. Everyone is in the same boat, so you have to get on with it. It's a good group of players and they are looking after themselves, so we're comfortable that they'll pick things up quickly again.

"We have had a few postponements now, so we don't want too many more disruptions, but we can only go with the way things are. If games are called off then there's nothing much that we can do about it.

"As a group they are in buoyant mood, and I don't see any reason for that to change even with the games that have been called off.

"If you'd asked me which game was going to be tougher - Huddersfield at home or Tranmere away, it would have been a spin of the coin. Each one in their own right is difficult.

"You would imagine that Tranmere have got a great camaraderie going there now and they will all be sticking together. They are in a situation similar to the one that were in last year where we were fighting for our lives. Every result is vital in that situation and there is no doubt that it will be a tough game.

"We never have an easy time down there so it's one where we will have to be at our very best. There is a new manager and a new style of play, so the victory that we had here has no bearing on what will happen on Monday at all.

"We're continuing discussions with the three players {Taiwo, Pericard and Clayton}, but nothing is imminent at the moment.

"We know that it's Tom's last game at Tranmere if we don't sort something with him. so we are going to re-open talks after that. I'm always hopeful that something will be resolved, and we are at the end of the line in terms of time limits with what we can do with all of these lads, so it's somehting that we are keen to sort out. We want to try and wrap them all up as quickly as we can.

"The focus now is on the trip to Tranmere and on doing our jobs properly there. We want to come away with something from that, and that's what today's training session is all about."
