I CHALLENGED THE PLAYERS

Posted on: Wed 25 Nov 2009

Manager Greg Abbott spoke to us after the unbelievable game at MK Dons on Tuesday night:

"It was an amazing game and probably a good example of why we all enjoy the sport so much. There were two sides really going for it and I think we can feel very pleased with the way we have reacted after the disappointment of Saturday.

We came down here on Monday and we have taken a little bit of time to look at things, have a few frank discussions, and I think it helped us to focus. I think it was probably just what was needed.

It was pleasing to see that we took the lessons on board and we started really well. To go three up, normally you would think that was job done but we just don't do things that way at all.

We were on top at the start and at the finish and that little spell that we gave them in the middle caused us a few problems. But we have shown excellent character and I don't think that too many people will argue the fact that we deserved the result.

It was an important one for us because we didn't do ourselves any favours at all against Swindon. The way we approached that game was all wrong and the fans won't accept that. We had to show that we could roll our sleeves up and put it right, and the players have done that for us tonight.

Obviously it's important that we find a bit of consistency but, for now, we have shown people that we are together and that we want to take this club forward. The backroom staff, the players and the management team ... we are all very hurt when we get a result and a performance like we did on Saturday.

Tonight's game has probably given us as much a lift as the game at the weekend knocked us down. I have been largely pleased with how we have played this season and I am very pleased with the result tonight. Obviously there are things that we aren't happy with, but I don't think now is the time to look at them. I challenged the players to give us all a good team display and they rose up to that, and that's all we can ask for.

We made a couple of changes because we have players in this squad who are chomping at the bit. I went with Adam Collin because he has worked hard and he has been pushing Lenny all the way. He has played well when we have used him and there is very little between them. We have a squad of players here and we will always use them when we feel it's necessary.

Overall I am most pleased with the attitude that has been shown by everyone since we got back together on Monday. It has been positive and very, very focused, and we have our reward with what was a very good win in an unbelievable game."
