THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Posted on: Mon 16 Nov 2009

United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us this morning about the game at Bristol Rovers at the weekend.

He said: "I think we all spent our weekend feeling very disappointed with how the game turned out.

"The lads gave everything in what was a tough game in tough conditions, and they deserved to come away with something from it. We all hate losing any game, but to lose when you have played as well as that makes it even harder to take.

"The main message today is that I am delighted with the way that we approached the game. I told the players that on Saturday and I will remind them of that today. If they keep performing in that way then we will be heading in the right direction, because their attitude was superb.

"We now have a very important game on Tuesday night to get ready for, and the focus has to switch towards that. We could dwell on it, but that doesn't do anyone any good. Obviously we have to discuss the reasons behind the goals we conceded, because we want to learn from that, but we will also focus on the positives from the performance and start to build the lads up again.

"Some of the football we played on Saturday was fantastic. We coped really well with the conditions and we felt, particularly when we went 2-1 up, that we were going to go on and win the game. We can talk about chances missed, but we also have to look at closing the game down and making sure that we stay tight once we have got our noses in front.

"I thought that Vincent Pericard had an excellent game. He had to work hard in tough conditions, and we felt that by bringing Scott Dobie on it would add a bit of pace and energy, and help to keep Bristol Rovers pinned a little deeper in their own half, as well as tighten things up in midfield. We had taken the lead so we wanted to try and give them something to think about rather than give them the momentum. Dobes came on and put himself about, and that's exactly what we wanted from him.

"We want to win every game, and it will be no different at Morecambe. We want to progress in that competition, but we know that they will be thinking the same."
