NO FLUENCY OR QUALITY

Posted on: Sun 08 Nov 2009

Manager Greg Abbott spoke to us shortly after full-time following the 2-2 draw with Morecambe.

He said: "If I didn't raise a wry smile and try to find some humour I would be very angry right now.

"It shows you just how amazing this game is, because we have come off the back of two good results into a performance like this. It shows that if you go away from your game plan then you will get punished.

"Morecambe came here with a real determination and we have gone away from our game plan, so that has made it very hard work for us at times.

"We've been hurt today, even though we haven't lost the game, because we should have won it. I won't hide behind the fact that we are happy with a draw, because we're not. But they did deserve to get something out of the game if I'm perfectly honest.

"The disappointing thing is that we still choose to do the wrong things and make the wrong decisions within the 90 minutes of football. Long term that will hurt us.

"We never really got any fluency or quality to our game. Bits and pieces were alright but the final ball from wide areas was very poor. When you work hard to get the ball into those areas then you have to deliver. We are setting ourselves standards and if we drop below them then we have to expect criticism.

"The sending off isn't one that is up for much debate. He kicked out, and I didn't see what might have gone on before, but he lashed out and he had to go.

"We're trying to get some momentum going and a bit of breathing space for ourselves. I've just been in a conversation where someone has talked about me being under pressure again, and that borders on the ridiculous. What we have to do is keep things in context. We haven't lost a game and it's an FA Cup tie, and you will see from some of the results that anything can happen in this competition.

"We just want to keep these games in context and not go from one extreme to another from week to week. We aren't a wonderful side after what we did last week, and we're not a joke side because of the result from this week. What we're trying to do is build a decent and consistent team so, from today, we all have a right to be a little bit upset with the performance. If we can look at it all with a little bit more balance, it is right to criticise some things, but we are still in the FA Cup as it stands."
