MIN BY MIN TEXT ACTION - SOUTHEND

Posted on: Sat 24 Oct 2009

Live from Brunton Park, Lee Rooney brings you blow by blow action from this afteroon's League One game against Southend United. Keep pressing refresh on your browser to read the latest update.

CARLISLE UNITED 2 (Pericard 11, Anyinsah 80) SOUTHEND UNITED 1 (Laurent 42) FT

1654: At last, a win for United in a game which they mostly dominated. Some decent performances all round in the Blues team today, with Pericard and Dobie showing signs of having a good understanding upfront and Keogh showing he can play the maraudering right-back role. Keep an eye on the Official Site over the next few days for reaction to the win. I'll be back next Saturday as promotion candidates Charlton Athletic visit Brunton Park.

FULL-TIME - Carlisle United 2 Southend United 1

90+3 min: Southend's Lee Barnard picks up a booking for dissent after disagreeing with a free-kick decision given in United's favour.

90+2 min: A combination of Keogh and Anyinsah win the ball on the right, with Joe then sprinting away down the wing. He then plays a ball down the middle that splits the defence open but it's got too much on it for Pericard to get on the ball and Mildenhall comes to claim.

90+1 min: Corner to Southend on the right-wing as Horwood helps Kav's high clearance of out play. Herd comes across agin to take a left-footed inswinger that Dobie heads clear to the left-wing. From the cross back in, Pidgeley comes but seems to be blocked by one of his own players and spills the ball but Herd's shot cannons off Kav and clear to safety.

90 min: The fourth official has indicated there will be a minimum of three minutes added time at the end of the game.

87 min: Sponsor's Man of the Match has gone to Vincent Pericard. The big Frenchman's certainly had a good game and there were a few other contenders for the award, such as Dobie and Keogh.

86 min: McCormack brings down Dobie on the halfway line and picks up Southend's second booking of the afternoon.

85 min: Good skill on the Southend right by Laurent but Horwood comes across and blocks his cross giving the visitors a corner. Herd comes across and takes a left-footed inswinger right into the six yard box but Keogh heads away to safety, with Anyinsah completing the job by winning a throw-in near the halfway line.

82 min: Corner up the other end for Southend after Horwood blocks Barnard's cross. Herd takes a left-footed inswinger that Pidgeley comes for but doesn't get it and Moussa sees his shot deflected over for another corner. Herd takes it again but this time Pidgeley comes and claims it, with the ref giving a foul in his favour as well.

80 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 2 Southend United 1 - A goal out of nowhere for the Blues! Southend were causing problems up the other end, with Christophe sending a shot well over the bar. United go up the other end and Anyinsah is played in on the right-hand side of the box and he hits it across goal to put United back in the lead.

78 min: Long throw-in from the right-wing by Keogh causes problems in the box for Southend. Barrett scoops his clearance in the air and Taiwo lays it off for Keogh but he tries the shot instead of a cross and smashes it into the Waterworks End.

75 min: Another free-kick on the wing for United, this time the right. Harte takes it but it's straight into Mildenhall's hands. From his quick kick out Southend are on the break and Barnard plays it to Laurent on the right who sends in a cross that Pidgeley punches and appears to be fouled but Moussa blazes it over into the Warwick Road End.

74 min: Pericard wins a free-kick after being hauled down on the left-wing, just inline with the 18-yard line. Kav takes a right-footed inswinger and Mildenhall flaps at it but the Southend defence clear before a United player can get onto the ball.

70 min: Honestly, there's not a problem with the website. It's just been that uneventful in the last ten minutes. Dobie and Anyinsah have now switched again.

65 min: Good play on the left by Horwood sees the United left-back send in a dangerous cross that Pericard and then Dobie at the far post can't quite get on to. First chance in a while, the game is starting to get very scrappy with both sides struggling to keep possession.

60 min: A quick note about that United substitution - Anyinsah has gone upfront with Pericard, with Dobie switching to the right-wing.

59 min: Free-kick to United about 35 yards out after a handball by a Southend defender. Robson, Kav and Harte all standing over this one. It's Robson who takes it but he smashes it straight into the wall before conceding a free-kick after a late tackle on Barnard.

58 min: Robson is blocked by Grant on the left as he looks to go on a run and it's a free-kick to United. Kav takes a right-footed inswinger to the far post but Mildenhall comes and punches well away to safety.

56 min: United make their first change of the afternoon, with Kevan Hurst coming off for Joe Anyinsah. Not sure if that's tactical of an injury.

54 min: Bit of a quiet period, not much happening as both sides battle for the ball in midfield.

48 min: Today's attendance is 4,551.

47 min: First chance of the half and it's for the visitors. Laurent does well to play it in to Barnard who lays it off for McCormack who fires a shot from 30 yards that goes just wide of Pidgeley's right-hand post.

1604: Both teams are now back out on the pitch and we're more or less ready to go, with Southend getting us underway.

1549: It's the same old story for United. Looking comfortable for long periods but one lapse at the back and it's all square. Plenty of positives so far though, with Keogh looking solid at right-back and Dobie and Pericard linking up very well upfront. Still plenty of time to get a win from this one. Back soon!

HALF-TIME - Carlisle United 1 Southend United 1

45+1 min: What a baffling decision. Kav takes a free-kick just inside the Southend half and plays it towards Pericard in the area. His marker gets a flick onto the ball and Pericard shepherds the ball out for a corner. The linesman appears to flag for it, but then the ref overrules him from much furhter away to give a goal-kick!

45 min: The fourth official has indicated there will be a minimum of two minutes added time at the end of the first-half.

43 min: United are back on the attack and Pericard lays it off for Dobie who turns and sends a powerful low shot towards goal but Mildenhall saves well.

42 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Southend United 1 - Spoke too soon. From the resulting throw-in, Pidgeley comes for the ball but doesn't get it and from the scramble that follows, Francis Laurent scuffs the ball into the back of the net for the equaliser.

41 min: Southend break down the middle and no-one's closing down Moussa. He gets to 30 yards out before sending a stinging dive towards goal that Pidgeley parries away to safety.

40 min: O'Keefe has slotted into midfield for the visitors, who now appear to be playing with Lee Barnard upfront on his own.

39 min: Southend are making a change already, and it's the dangerman Dougie Freedman who's coming off for Stuart O'Keefe. Looks like an injury for the ex-Crystal Palace man.

36 min: It's a superb kick from Kav, very similar to Herd's a few minutes ago and Harte gets his head on to this one and it comes back off the crossbar before being cleared to safety. Up the other end, Christophe goes on a charging run down the middle but his shot from 25 yards is blocked by Danny Livesey's head.

35 min: Great pressure on the left-wing from Dobie sees Grant fall onto th eball and then handle it and the Southend right-back picks up a yellow card. Free-kick to United.

34 min: Clumsy tackle from Robson on the right-wing corner of the 18 yard box gives Southend a free-kick. Herd's kick is an excellent one, whipped in at pace but no Southend player can get the flick-on and it goes just wide of the far post.

32 min: Lovely passing football from United sees Pericard flick it to Dobie, who lays it to Taiwo who in turn sets up Hurst but his cross into the middle can't find Dobie as Barrett sticks out a leg to clear it.

30 min: Southend are on the attack now and Laurent goes past Robson and Horwood but his cut back is intercepted by Kav, giving the visitors a corner. The first kick comes in and is headed out by a United defender for another corner. This one from Francis causes more problems and Pidgeley is forced to make a smart stop from Laurent, before throwing himself at the ball as Barnard tried to get onto Barrett's flick-on.

27 min: Good cross field ball from Keogh sees Dobie not able to get on the end of it but it comes to Robson on the left, who takes a touch before lashing a shot on goal that Mildenhall does well to palm away to safety.

25 min: Good play down the left by Horwood sees him find Robson. He goes on a mazy run before finding a charging Kav on the edge of the area but it's a great tackle by a Southend defender as he's about to shoot.

24 min: Little bit of Southend pressure in the last few minutes including a shout for handball against Tom Taiwo. Moussa then sees a cross from the left blocked and out for a corner. Francis takes it quickly towards the edge of the area but it's a total waste as United get it clear.

21 min: A freak wind catches the United defence out and Freedman is away down the left. He advances into the box but Harte comes across and concedes a corner. Francis takes a right-footed inswinger from the left and it's got Pidgeley scrambling as it comes back off the angle of post and bar before being cleared to safety.

18 min: United are all over the visitors so far. A long high ball into the middle of the Southend half sees Dobie bring the ball down superbly and turn his man. He's through on goal but a bit of pressure from a Southend defender is enough to put him off and Mildenhall comes out to block his left-foot shot.

17 min: Almost a comedy goal for United. Pericard plays it back for Hurst to cross in and Mildenhall comes and claims the ball. He's clattered by one of his own players and drops the ball but somehow the Southend defence clears with Taiwo closing in on the ball.

15 min: Kav and Robson lay it off for Harte but he plays it back to Kav who sees his low shot blocked. It comes to Hurst who dinks it into the middle where Dobie powers a header just over the bar. Good effort from Dobes.

14 min: What a mazy run by Keogh! Picking up the ball from Taiwo, he beats three players before a fourth Southend player brings him down to give United a free-kick in a very good position on the edge of the D. Looks like Harte is going to take it.

13 min: Matty Robson's away down the left and goes on a mazy run into the area but is eventually stopped by a combination of Herd and Grant, before conceding a free-kick.

12 min: Just before that goal, Danny Livesey had made a great tackle to stop Frank Moussa as he was about to pull the trigger. Could have easily been 1-0 to the visitors.

11 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Southend United 0 - Great pressure on the right-wing by Dobie. He holds it up, twists and turns past Francis before sending in an inviting cross that sees Vincent Pericard cut across his defender and get a deft touch to send it past Mildenhall. Good finishing from the big Frenchman and he's scored on his home debut!

8 min: Up the other end and Southend have their first attack that sees Danny Livesey forced to concede a corner. It's taken on the left by Francis but his right-footed inswinger is comfortably caught by Pidgeley.

7 min: Terrific bit of skill from Keogh after Kav heads his throw-in back to him. He cuts it back to Hurst who sees his dinked cross cleared as far as Horwood who has a crack from 35 yards but sees his shot go high and wide.

6 min: A chaotic couple of minutes at the back for Southend. Pericard cross from the right after being setup by Hurst and Dobie challenges the keeper who spills the ball. It comes to Taiwo but he's surrounded very quickly and sees his shot blocked.

5 min: Harte takes the kick and it's a very clever one that he cuts back low to Kav but he scuffs his shot and it's cleared to safety by the Southend defence.

4 min: Dangerous cross from the right by Keogh finds Dobie at the far post. He heads back across goal where Pericard is lurking but the defence get in and concede a corner. From the corner, Keogh gets a flick on and it comes to Hurst on the right, who sees his cross blocked by Barrett's hand to give United a free-kick in a dangerous position.

2 min: Good pressure from Pericard in the box wins United a corner on the left. It's a left-footed outswinger from Robson but it's well headed away by the Southend defence.

1 min: I've been caught out already here, as the big Stobart truck with the big screen isn't at the game today! Thankfully I have a spare stopwatch with me. This afternoon's the first chance I've had to see Vincent Perciard and I tell you what, he's a big fella!

1501: United will be kicking off this afternoon and will be attacking the Warwick Road End in the first-half. Tom Taiwo and Kevan Hurst get the game underway.

1458: The two teams are now coming out for the usual pre-match line-ups and handshakes. This afternoon's game sees United backing the "Kick It Out" campaign, stamping out racism in football. A fine cause to back too. More details on the Kick It Out campaign can be found by clicking here.

1455: The referee for this afternoon's game is Geoff Eltringham from Tyne & Wear. He has never previously taken charge of a United game and this is his first season on the Football League list. So far he's taken charge of 7 games, handing out 12 yellow cards and one red card.

Taking up assistant referee duties are Paul Curry and Seb Stockbridge, with Paul Kettlewell in the fourth official role.

1452: Disappointing result for the Youth Team this morning as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at Bury. Full reaction from Eric Kinder here on the official site will follow in the next few days.

1450: The visitors do possess plenty of quality in their side despite their cutbacks in the summer, including League One's top scorer Lee Barnard. Also in their ranks is a Mr Dougie Freedman, who has been a bit of a scourge to United in recent years!

1444: Just incase your wonder, that's not a mistake below, Southend really do have only four substitutes. The Shrimpers have a very small squad this season and have had to use youth team players on their bench on several occasions. Hasn't done them much harm though, as they sit in 10th place at present.

1442: Richard Offiong has failed to recover from that calf injury picked up in the Reserves 1-1 draw against Celtic in midweek. Tony Kane returns after his loan spell from Darlington and takes his place on the bench, with youth team striker Ryan Bowman also among the subs for the second game in a row.

1440: A few changes from last week's side that lost 3-1 at Yeovil. The players in defence stay the same but we believe that Richard Keogh will be playing at right-back, with Ian Harte switching to centre-back. In midfield, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson drops to the bench with Graham Kavanagh returning after his suspension while Joe Anyinsah is only fit enough for the bench, with Kevan Hurst returning to the starting XI.

1437: Today's teams are as follows -

United - Pidgeley, Keogh, Livesey, Harte, Horwood, Hurst, Kavanagh, Taiwo, Robson, Dobie, Pericard. Subs (not used) - Collin, Bridge-Wilkinson, Murphy, Anyinsah, Rothery, Bowman, Kane.

Southend - Mildenhall, Francis, Christophe, Barrett (captain), Grant, McCormack, Barnard, Moussa, Freedman, Herd, Laurent. Subs - O'Keefe, Joyce, Asante, Whittaker.

1435: Afternoon everyone. The weather may be grey, wet and miserable this afternoon in Cumbria, but hopefully there'll be nothing "blue" about United's performance this afternoon as they take on a Southend side that are doing well this season despite having had to reduce their squad during the summer. Full team news to follow shortly!
