CARLISLE UNITED 1 (Harte pen 4) PORTSMOUTH 3 (Dindane 26, Webber 32, Vanden Borren 63) FT
2143: Brave effort from United this evening but Pompey showed that little bit of Premier League class to get the win and advance into the Fourth Round. The very impressive DIndane was a constant thorn in United's side and was the real difference between the teams. Next up for United is Pompey's near neighbours Southampton who travel up to Brunton Park on Saturday for a game that will see United celebrate 100 Years at Brunton Park. I'll be doing the Min by Min report as usual so join me at about 2pm for all the action.
FULL-TIME - Carlisle United 1 Portsmouth 3
90+3 min: Decent left-foot effort from Raven about 30 yards out but it's well held by Begovic.
90 min: What a save by Pidgeley! Kanu beats the offside trap and then cuts it back for Piquionne who shoots at goal but Pidgeley makes a magnificent one-handed save. Up the other end, Offiong has a crack from distance that flies wide of Begovic's goal. A minimum of four minutes time added on at the end here.
89 min: So close to a goal for United! Robson takes a corner that's played back to him. Hurst then sends it to the far post where Keogh rises superbly but his powerful header comes back off the post with Begovic well beaten.
88 min: Almost a fourth for Pompey. Vanden Borren gets away down the right and sends the ball to Piquionne but he totally miskicks it with an open goal waiting and Thirlwell then clears.
87 min: Pompey make their final change, with Danny Webber coming off and Fredrick Piquionne replacing him.
86 min: Dobie does well to turn just inside the area and get a shot away but it goes wide of Begovic's right-hand post.
83 min: Offiong is pulled back just inside the Pompey half and it's a free-kick to United. Harte takes it long into the box but it's easily claimed by Begovic. Not long after Dobie shows lovely control 20 yards out to setup Anyinsah but his shot is straight at Begovic.
79 min: Clumsy tackle on the edge of the area by a Pompey defender wins a free-kick for United. Harte steps up and curls it towards the far post but it's always going wide. Decent effort though.
77 min: Pompey make their second change, with Michael Brown coming off for Hassan Yebda. Also United make their final change, with Taiwo coming off and Scott Dobie replacing him.
74 min: Looks like United are now three at the back, with Keogh, Raven and Harte slotting in to defence.
73 min: United make their first two changes of the evening, with Richard Keogh and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson coming on for Peter Murphy and Danny Livesey. Both centre-backs off for United then.
68 min: Pompey make their first change, taking off the very impressive Aruna Dindane for Kanu.
67 min: Thirlwell is bundled over and wins a free-kick about 40 yards out. Harte takes it but doesn't get past the edge of the area and it's easily cleared.
63 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Portsmouth 3 - The Premier League side are now two-up and that man Dindane caused problems again. A long ball sees Yebda win a flick-on. Livesey hesitates and Dindane sneaks in and sets up Vanden Borre sneaks in to slide it past Pidgeley.
61 min: Patient build-up on the right by Hurst and Raven sees the latter send in a left-foot cross to the far post that Robson almost gets on the end of but it's just too high for him.
58 min: It's like a battlefield out there, with three players down injured. Two are United players (Robson and Taiwo), with the latter looking the most hurt after getting a couiple of good tackles in. He's received attention from Dolly but seems to be fine now.
56 min: Anyinsah wins a corner on the right after good hold-up play. Hurst takes it into the six-yard box where Anyinsah rises and heads the ball just wide of Begovic's right-hand post.
53 min: Harte concedes a free-kick for a shirt-tug on a Pompey attacker. Looks a soft one to me. Belladj steps up and takes it on the right-wing but it's straight into Pidgeley's hands.
52 min: Clumsy tackle from Dindane on Thirlwell sees United win a free-kick 45 yards out on the left-wing. Harte sends it long to the far post where Murphy brings it down and smashes a right-foot shot across goal and just wide of the post.
50 min: Second-half hasn't started quite as quickly as the first did, with both sides struggling to keep possession.
2052: Pompey get the game back underway. Neither side have made any changes at the break.
2037: So after a thrilling start from United, they've been pegged back by the Premier League, who now lead going into the break. The visitors look a big threat on the break but looks all over the place at the back, with Hurst and Taiwo causing all kinds of problems down the right. Could be an exciting second-half in store here. Join me again shortly for more!
HALF-TIME - Carlisle United 1 Portsmouth 2
45+3 min: Poor touch from Murphy lets Webber in but the Irishman tugs back the Pompey forward and concedes a free-kick 25 yards out. Basinas takes it but it's poor and Livesey easily clears.
45+2 min: The corner from Basinas finds Utaka who heads towards goal but it's cleared off the line and then the follow-up header is easily claimed by Pidgeley.
45+1 min: Basinas has a shot from 25 yards that takes a huge deflection off Livesey and goes just wide of Pidgeley's left-hand post, with the keeper having gone the other way.
45 min: Hurst takes this corner which Livesey gets on the end of but sends it just wide of the far post. United are still very much in this game. There will be a minimum of three minutes added time at the end of the first-half.
44 min: Robson wins a corner on the left-wing. He takes it short to Hurst whose cross is cleared to Thirlwell. He plays it to Harte who sends in a shot that's blocked out for another corner, this time on the right.
42 min: Pompey threaten on the counter again. Utaka finds Webber in space on the right-hand side of the area and he sends a shot past Pidgeley but Murphy gets back and blocks, with Pidgeley picking up the rebound.
41 min; Thirwell does brilliantly twice to win the ball and then sets Robson away down the left. He's got acres of space and gets into a crossing position but he sends his centre out for a goal-kick.
38 min: Getting a bit lively out there. Anyinsah and Kaboul knock into each other and Anyinsah is down injured. Belladj refuses to put it out before playing a sloppy pass that Taiwo wins and puts out of play. Hurst isn't happy with Belladj and lets him know it. Yebda then gets involved before the ref comes over and tells them all to calm down.
35 min: Offiong does well to win the ball on the right byline before sending in a cross that has Begovic scrambling but no-one is there at the far post to tap it in to the empty net.
34 min: Pompey almost make it 3-1. A very quick break sees the ball come to Dindane who tries to dink it over Pidgeley but sends it well over the bar.
32 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Portsmouth 2 - United go to sleep at the back again. Dindane holds onto the ball in the corner and finds Yebda. He takes his time and sends in a cross that finds Webber totally unmarked between two defenders to head into the corner. No chance for Pidgeley, who will probably be disappointed with the defending for that goal.
31 min: Another corner for United as Belladj messes about in the area and Taiwo sneaks in only for Mokoena to come across and concede a corner. It's taken by Hurst but Begovic easily claims it.
27 min: Pompey win a corner from Utaka. It's taken by Basinas and eventually comes to Utaka on the edge of the area who smashes it through a group of players and Pidgeley makes a very good stop.
26 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Portsmouth 1 - Portsmouth take advantage of that bit of luck from the foul on Begovic. A long ball from that free-kick misses everyone and Utaka sneaks in. He puts it around Pidgeley and Dindane is there to tap into an empty net. United caught napping there.
25 min: Really good play involving Raven, Taiwo and Hurst sees United win a corner. Hurst sends one in that Offiong gets on but his header is blocked. It comes back out to Hurst who sends in another cross that Begovic totally misses but is given a total left-off by the ref who sees a foul out of nothing.
22 min: A quick throw from Robson finds Anyinsah who wins a corner off Kaboul. Robson takes the corner to the near post but doesn't beat the first man and it's cleared by Pompey.
21 min: It's difficult to keep up with play here! United have had a corner in the last minute that Begovic spilled but then retrieved again. Then Murphy commits a foul up the other end to give Pompey a free-kick 25 yards out. Belladj hits it over the wall but Pidgeley just about holds on at the post.
19 min: More Pompey pressure. Dindane shows great trickery on the left before dinking in a cross that Pidgeley gets just enough on it to stop it being easy for Webber. He sends it out wide where Vanden Borre sends in a cross that eventually finds Yebda who sends in a low shot that Murphy blocks three yards out.
17 min: Hurst does well down by the right-wing corner flag to win a corner. He takes it himself, but it's very long and misses absolutely everyone. Murphy does retrieve it but is then fouled. Murph takes it quickly and finds Robson who dinks in a cross but it misses everyone and finds Hurst. He sends it back in but Harte commits a foul at the far post and it's a Portsmouth free-kick.
13 min: Almost a gift for the visitors there. A long punt forward from Kaboul sees Murphy leave the ball but a Pompey forward almost gets on it but Pidgeley gratefully claims the ball.
12 min: Pompey's best chance so far. Good link-up play from Webber sees him find Utaka who turns well but curls his shot just over Pidgeley's bar.
10 min: Kaboul does well to shrug off Offiong before advancing forward and sending a low left-footed shot well wide of the United goal. That one was never troubling Pidgeley.
9 min: That bell has been silent... until now. But it's not going to spoil this start for United!
8 min: Nice build-up play on the left by Pompey sees Dindane get a cross in but again Pidgeley comes and claims it well.
7 min: Pompey win a free-kick inside the United half, just on the edge of the centre circle. It's taken short and then chipped into the box but Pidgeley comes very confidently to claim the ball on the penalty spot.
6 min: Robson wins a corner on the left-wing. He takes it himself and Livesey heads it straight up in the air. Comes to Hurst who plays it back out to Robson but his next cross is a poor one and goes out for a goal-kick.
5 min: United are absolutely flying here and Pompey have no idea what's hit them. Some debate in the press box over whether Mokoena should have been sent-off there. As it is, he didn't even get a booking.
4 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Portsmouth 0 - It's Ian Harte who steps up and cool as you like, sends Begovic the wrong way. Brilliant start for the Blues!
2 min: PENALTY TO UNITED! Offiong brought down by Mokoena as he's about to pull the trigger. No doubts about that one.
1947: United will be kicking off this evening and unusually, it will be towards the Warwick Road End in the first-half. Thirlwell and Offiong get us underway.
1944: Both teams are now out doing the usual line-ups and handshakes. Pompey will be wearing all-black while United are of course in their usual blue home kit.
1942: It's fair to say that Pompey haven't had the best of starts to the season, setting a Premier League record for worst start to the season with six straight defeats. Their only win coming in this competition, a 4-1 home victory over League Two side Hereford United.
1939: Atmosphere at the ground is building up nicely now. Looks to be a decent crowd, possibly the biggest of the season so far? Decent following from Portsmouth too. Haven't heard that ringing sound yet though...!
1933: Tonight's referee is Neil Swarbrick from Lancashire.
He last took charge of a United match back in May. It was the final game of the League One season for the Blues and saw them come out 2-0 winners thanks to stunning goals by Graham Kavanagh and Paul Thirlwell. The only player booked that afternoon was Peter Murphy. It's not the only dramatic United match he's been in the middle for - he was also referee for the action-packed Conference Play-Off Semi-Final second leg against Aldershot!
Taking up assistant referee duties will be Gary Hilton and Billy Khatib, with Nigel Miller in the fourth official role.
1929: The most noticable thing about the Pompey line-up is the fact that they have just six substitutes. Not sure why they're one short, I'll try and find out. They've made seven changes from their side that lost 2-0 at Aston Villa on Saturday, with only Kaboul, Mokoena, Belladj and Vanden Borre keeping their places. Among those coming in are Nigerian international John Utaka. A few stars like David James and Jamie O'Hara missing but still plenty of talent in that starting XI.
1921: So it's two changes for United from the side that lost 2-0 at Oldham this weekend, with Tom Taiwo and Joe Anyinsah coming in for Graham Kavanagh and Scott Dobie. Kavanagh drops out of the 18 altogether while Dobie is on the subs bench, with Evan Horwood filling in the extra space on the bench.
1918: Tonight's two line-ups are as follows:
United - Pidgeley, Raven, Murphy, Livesey, Harte, Hurst, Taiwo, Thirlwell, Robson, Offiong, Anyinsah. Subs - Collin, Horwood, Bridge-Wilkinson, Dobie, Rothery, Keogh. Madine.
Portsmouth - Begovic, Kaboul, Mokoena, Mullins, Utaka, Vanden Borre, Webber, Dindane, Yebda, Basinas, Belladj. Subs - Ashdown, Piquionne, Brown, Kanu, Mahoto, Sowah.
1915: Evening everyone and welcome to tonight's Min by Min text report. It's a break from league action this evening as the Carling Cup takes centre stage. Premier League side Portsmouth are the opponents for what looks like an intruiging tie. Team news to follow shortly.
