MIN BY MIN TEXT ACTION - OLDHAM

Posted on: Tue 11 Aug 2009

Live from Brunton Park, Lee Rooney brings you blow by blow action from today's Carling Cup game against Oldham Athletic. Keep pressing refresh on your browser to read the latest update.

CARLISLE UNITED 1 (Dobie 89) OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0 FT

2137: Not the best of games but it's the result that matters and United are through to the Second Round of the Carling Cup for the fourth season in a row. Dobie opened his account for the season with a good header and put in a decent overall performance upfront. At the back, a first clean sheet of the campaign will have given the defence a good confidence boost. I'll be back again for the Exeter game in 11 days time, so join me then. Meanwhile, keep an eye out on the official site over the next few days for reaction to tonight's game.

FULL-TIME - Carlisle United 1 Oldham Athletic 0

90+2 min: United are keeping the ball in the left-wing corner, winning a few corners off the Oldham defenders. I think the Latics defence is sick of Rothery keeping the ball down there with Kav!

90 min: There's going to be a minimum three minutes of added time. Meanwhile Oldham make their final change, with Chris Taylor coming off for Lewis Alessandra.

89 min: GOAL! Carlisle United 1 Oldham Athletic 0 - That could be the winner for United. Good play by Madine to win the ball, sees the ball come to Raven on the right. He sends in a great cross to the far post and Scott Dobie rises highest to head past Brill.

85 min: Terrific run by Taiwo sees the on-loan Chelsea youngster reach the byline and cut back a perfect cross to Anyinsah but it's a difficult angle and Joe hits the ball across goal instead of on target.

84 min: United win a corner after good pressure from Madine. Kav takes a right-footed outswinger from the right that finds Dobie but he gets ahead of the ball and ends up heading it out of the area.

82 min: Oldham's best chance of the game. Chris Taylor jinks and turns his way into the box on the left and sends in a curling shot 12 yards out that Pidgeley does well to palm away to safety.

80 min: United make their second change of the afternoon, with Matty Robson coming off and Gavin Rothery coming on to make his home debut for United.

78 min: Not a huge amount happening right now, the game appears to be meandering towards extra-time.

76 min: Whitaker's had that cut seen to and is back out on the pitch, complete with a fresh shirt on with no number.

75 min: Hazell hauls back Madine after he gets away from him inside the United half. Very cynical by the experienced defender and it's a booking.

72 min: Danny Whitaker, who had to go off for some treatment on a head injury earlier, is off again to get it looked at. Looks like he has a cut. Oldham temporarily down to ten men.

71 min: That'll be the last bit of action for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, with Gary Madine coming on to replace him for United's first change of the evening.

70 min: Best chance of the game so far and MBW will want to forget that finish. Good passing play in midfield sees Taiwo lift it over the top for MBW. He's miles onside and advances on goal but smashes his shot into the Warwick Road End.

69 min: United win a free-kick just outside the centre-circle in the Oldham half. Kav takes it long into the box and finds Dobie at the far post but he's stretching to reach it and it's comfortable for Brill.

67 min: United struggle to clear the ball after Harte sees his attempt to get it up the pitch blocked by Whitaker. The ball comes to Livesey, who can't get enough on the header and Parker sends a crashing volley miles over the bar.

64 min: The player down was Worthington but he's fine now and back on the pitch. Oldham are going to make those two changes, with O'Grady and Byfield coming off, and Keigan Parker and Pawell Abbott coming on.

62 min: Oldham are getting ready to make two changes but they're waiting a minute as one of their players has gone down injured. Not too sure who it is at the moment.

59 min: Kav loses possession in midfield then commits a cynical (some might say necessary!) foul on Byfield. That's a booking for the United player-coach. The resulting free-kick from Holdsworth is well headed away by Keogh.

56 min: A long throw from Robson causes chaos in the Oldham box and from the goalmouth scramble that ensues, United win a corner. Kav whips in a great inswinger that finds Livesey in the six-yard box, but he can only direct his header wide of the far post.

54 min: A foul by Harte on Whitaker gives Oldham a free-kick on the right. The free-kick is cleared out of the box at far as Sean Gregan, but his 30 yard volley flies wide and over.

53 min: Almost a Kav special. Robson gets away down the left and puts a cross in that's well cleared. It's cleared to the edge of the box where Kav takes a touch, beats his man and sends in a powerful low shot that's deflected behind by Holdsworth for a corner. The corner's taken short by Robson to Kav but he loses possession and the danger is over for Oldham.

50 min: Brill almost has a moment to forget, as he tries to control a back pass but almost slips. Anyinsah and Dobie close him down but he does well to clear.

49 min: Robson takes a long-throw on the left near the corner flag that finds Keogh, He knocks it back to Kav who brings it down and lines up a shot but the whistle's blown for a foul committed by Keogh in winning that flick-on.

2048: United get the second-half underway, kicking towards the Warwick Road End. No changes for either side at the break.

2047: Both sides are now back out on the pitch and ready to ge the second-half underway. The weather's got a bit worse since the break, with a constant drizzle covering Brunton Park.

2032: Fair to say this hasn't been a classic so far. Very few chances for both sides, with Keogh's excellent header that hit the post being the stand out moment. Hopefully the second 45 will be a bit better. More from me shortly.

HALF-TIME - Carlisle United 0 Oldham Athletic 0

45 min: Dobie does well to win the ball 40 yards out. He advances towards the area and is about to shoot but is well tackled by Gregan. There will be a minimum of one minute timed added on at the end of the first-half.

44 min: Harte spoons a clearance in the air and can't recover, Whitaker making sure it goes out for a corner. It's taken short by Whitaker to Gilbert but the cross is easy pickings for Pidgeley.

40 min: Byfield turns Livesey on the right and gets to the byline. He cuts his cross back to the edge of the area but it's put out for a corner by Kav. Byfield takes a short one to Whitaker but his cross is easily cleared.

38 min: Bit of a break in play, as Taiwo is treated for a knock to the face. He's made of tough stuff is Tom, and is straight back onto the pitch at the first opportunity.

34 min: That header from Keogh was a cracker. He must have headed that at knee height from about 12 yards out. Very unlucky and the nearest either side have got to opening the scoring.

33 min: United break quickly down field, with MBW finding Anyinsah on the right. He gets to the byline and tries to get a cross in, but it's blocked and goes out for a corner. Kav takes a right-footed inswinger which finds a diving Richard Keogh. He sends a powerful header through a group of players and it comes back off the post. Robson sends a cross back in but the linesman has his flag up for offside against Dobie.

26 min: Kav is brought down just inside the United half and it's a free-kick. Harte takes a long drive one that finds Anyinsah on the far corner of the box, but his header goes wide, although Brill had his post well covered.

25 min: Robson does very well to beat the offside trap from a long ball, sending in a cross that Hazell puts out for a corner. Kav takes a right-footed inswinger from the left into the six-yard box but it's well headed away by an Oldham defender.

20 min: Good play by United again sees the ball reach Anyinsah out wide. His original cross finds Kav but he's crowded out near the edge of the box. Oldham look to have gained possession but a great interception by Keogh sees the big defender charge forward with the ball. He plays it out wide to Anyinsah and continues his run but the cross is a poor one, going all the way to Robson on the far side. His cross is a more dangerous one, low to the near post where MBW gets on the end of it but can't direct it towards goal.

17 min: Great determination in midfield from Taiwo to win the ball. He plays it to Anyinsah, who lays the ball back off to him. He tries a quick ball behind the defence but Brill is alert to it, with Dobie closing in. United starting to come to life in this game.

15 min: A lovely lofted ball over the top almost finds Robson on the left-wing, but Holdsworth does well to get a header back to Brill.

13 min: Good play down the right this time for United sees Raven find MBW, who turns and sends a curling left-foot shot a few feet wide of Brill's right-hand post.

12 min: United's first chance of the game. Good play down the left from Robson and Kav sees the former get to the byline and send in a cross. Dobie gets on the end of it in the six-yard box but it's straight at Latics stopper Dean Brill.

10 min: Holdsworth takes a throw-in for the Latics on the right, just in-line with the United penalty area. He finds Byfield who turns Kav but sends his shot nearer the corner flag than Pidgeley's goal.

7 min: Good play by Oldham works the ball out to Whitaker on the right. He makes himself some space before sending in a dangerous cross that Pidgeley punches to the edge of the box. It comes back out to Whitaker but his second cross goes over everyone and out for a goal-kick.

3 min: United concede a free-kick on the right-wing. Danny Whitaker steps up to take it but it's straight into the arms of Lenny Pidgeley.

2 min: As if their outfield kits weren't bright enough, the keeper top is also fluorescent orange. Hard to miss them!

1 min: It does appear that Scott Dobie will be upfront for United with Joe Anyinsah on the wing. MBW will play the advanced role just behind Dobie, with Kav dropping back to a slightly deeper role than at the weekend.

1945: Oldham get us underway, kicking towards the Warwick Road End of the ground.

1944: Both teams are now out and going through the usual pleasantries. United are wearing the new blue home kit as you'd expect, while Oldham are wearing a fluorescent yellow shirt and black shorts. Very harsh on the eyes!

1941: Bit of The Lightning Seeds' Life of Riley blazing over the tannoy. Reminds me of Match of the Day circa mid/late 90s. Speaking of football on the BBC, anyone catch the brand new Football League Show on the BBC this weekend? Not a bad effort for the first show, though I'm not sure fans of Torquay and Chesterfield would necessarily agree!

1939: Bit of discussion in the press box as to how United will line-up this evening, with the main talking point being who will take Taylor's place on the right-wing. Both Joe Anyinsah and Scott Dobie can play there, but both can also play upfront. It looks like Marc Bridge-Wilkinson will play just behind whoever plays upfront.

1936: Oldham's record is a bit better than United, having made the final in 1990 only to lose 1-0 to Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest side. They started their season with a 0-0 draw at home to Stockport County on Saturday. The visitors had a familiar face to United fans on their bench, with John Ward involved in his first game as assistant to Gary Ablett for County.

1933: As mentioned in the preview to tonight's game, United's record in the Carling Cup isn't the best. It's over 30 years (1975) since The Blues made it to the Third Round, although they have got to the Second Round in each of the last three seasons (each time facing a side managed by Iain Dowie!). Overall, United have played 124 games in the competition, winning 41, losing 55 and drawing 28.

1925: So two changes for United this evening, with Paul Thirlwell missing out due to injury being one of them. The other, is Cleveland Taylor, who has travelled down to London to hold talks with Brentford after United accepted an offer from the League Two champions. Coming onto the bench after missing out on Saturday are Gavin Rothery and Michael Burns. For the visitors, both Sean Gregan and Chris Taylor pass late fitness tests and start. Former United target Dean Furman also starts in midfield for the visitors.

1919: Tonight's teams are as follows:

United: Pidgeley, Raven, Livesey, Keogh, Harte, Anyinsah, Taiwo, Kavanagh, Bridge-Wilkinson, Robson, Dobie - Subs (not used): Collin, Kane, Horwood, Rothery, Burns, Murphy, Madine.

Oldham: Brill, Worthington, Holdsworth, Hazell, Whitaker, O'Grady, Furman, Gregan, Taylor, Gilbert, Byfield. Subs (not used) - Abbott, Lomax, Alessandra, Parker, Lee, Stephens, Kazimierczak.

1915: Not sure why I said "dreaded penalty shoot-out", seeing as United have a very good record in game deciding spot-kicks, including at this stage in this competition a few years ago against Bradford City. Team sheet's just arrived, so I'll put them up shortly.

1904: Evening All. After the disappointment of Saturday's defeat against Brentford, it's a great chance for United to make an instant recovery this evening as they take on fellow League One side Oldham in the Carling Cup. It's a game that has got to be decided on the night, whether it be in 90 minutes, extra time or by the dreaded penalty shoot-out (I'm hoping for The Blues to have it wrapped up by about 9-40pm!). Full team news to follow shortly.
