Trialists James Marwood, Fraser McLaren and Martin McBride have joined United for the first phase of the Cumbrians' pre-season training package.

Marwood, 19, son of former Arsenal winger Brian, came through the Newcastle United Academy and has been described as a powerful flank player.

Former Gretna striker McLaren, 20, scored 10 goals in 40 appearances for Berwick last season having started his career with Ayr.

Glasgow-born midfielder McBride was a trainee with Albion and also had spells with Cowdenbeath and Stranrear.

Greg Abbott said: "You tend to accept trial players at this time of year, because a lot of clubs are getting their squad together.

"Sometimes names are suggested and if they come with a decent recommendation then there is no harm in taking a look at them."

"They can get involved with the pre-season programme and they tend to be really keen to make an impact," he added. "It gives us a chance to have a look at them and, if they do alright, then it becomes a huge bonus. If it doesn't work out then there is nothing lost for the club.

"I think they have found it to be hard work today, but that's what it is all about. Tomorrow will be tougher for them, and we intend to keep working with them until we go to Colchester. That gives us a really good chance to have a close look at them, and we can make an assessment on them from there. If we need to then we will invite them back into the club when we get back from Colchester, but they have a good week now to show us what they can do."
