MINUTE BY MINUTE TEXT ACTION

Posted on: Thu 16 Apr 2009

Live from Borough Park, Lee Rooney brings you blow by blow action from tonight's Cumberland Cup semi-final game against Workington Reds. Keep pressing refresh on your browser to read the latest update.

WORKINGTON REDS 1 (Arnison ET15) CARLISLE UNITED 0 FT

2122: A tough game for United's youngsters against a decent Reds side this evening. The conditions didn't help either side and it was Reds who took their one real chance late on. Reds go on to face Penrith in the final and Eric Kinder's youth side prepare themselves for a home clash against Shrewsbury this weekend. I'll be back on Saturday as the first-team take on Swindon Town at Brunton Park in a huge clash so join me then if you can't make it to the match.

FULL-TIME - Workington 1 (Arnison) Carlisle United 0

ET 15 min: GOAL! Workinton 1 (Arnison) Carlisle United 0 - Finally, a goal! Sadly, it's for the wrong team as far as United fans are concerned. A long ball down the middle is held up by the wind and Gareth Arnison is through on goal. With only Mitchell to beat, he composes himself before slotting the ball past the United keeper.

ET 13 min: Blake does well to win the ball in midfield before playing it out wide to Tinnion. He gets to the byline before playing it back to Blake but he skies his effort well over Collin's bar. Tough one for Jonny, who had to readjust his body to get anything on it.

ET 11 min: First chance of the second period of extra-time, but Callum Ruttledge's effort from 25 yards goes well wide of Mitchell's goal.

2112: Despite the cold, Derek's cracking a few "wind" jokes. Dear oh dear! Reds kick-off the second period of extra-time. Only ten minutes remember (thankfully!)

2111: Still no goals, penalties are looming. Going to be a very quick change here. A quick United goal would be nice.

ET HALF-TIME - Workington 0 Carlisle United 0

ET 5 min: United make their second change of the evening, with Liam Davison coming off for James Wood.

ET 4 min: Bowman picks it up 25 yards out and moves towards goal before hitting a shot that takes a deflection and goes out for a corner. Blake's initial corner is headed straight back out for a corner. His second kick is flicked back in before being cleared again. Swingelhurst knocks a cross in that is layed off for Davison who sends a volley wide of Collin's left-hand post.

ET 1 min: Lakeland is fouled on the right and it's a free-kick to United. Tinnion sends a good ball in and Bowman flicks it on to the far post, the ball goes out but Collin doesn't know and makes a great save from Blake's attempt to send it back into the middle.

2100: United are about to get the extra-time underway. Interestingly, it'll only be ten minutes each way and then if there's no winning goal, it'll be penalties. Eric doesn't think Darren wants to chase Ryan Bowman and James Reid much longer than that!

2057: Neither keeper was tested enough in that second period and as a result, we're going to have to suffer this wind and cold for at least another 30 minutes. Back soon for extra-time!

FULL-TIME - Workington 0 Carlisle United 0 - EXTRA TIME TO BE PLAYED

90 min: End to end action there. Reds are on the attack but Blake steals the ball and plays it to Reid. His touch is a delightful one that sends Tinnion away down the left. Rossi is trying to keep up with him and is struggling but the tricky left-winger wastes his chace by scuffing a shot well wide. He had both Reid and Bowman up there and neither player's happy with Conor's decision making there.

89 min: For the sake of the few hundred people here at Borough Park this evening, I'm praying for a winning goal before full-time!

88 min: Swinglehurst brings down Rossi on the right but the ref plays a good advantage and Jonny Wright is through on goal. He gets into the box but scuffs his shot well wide of Mitchell's right-hand post. Poor effort by the pacey forward.

87 min: Arnison does well down the left and wins a corner after his cross comes off Aldred. He takes the kick himself and the ball comes off a United player but Lakelands clears well just next to the post.

84 min: Both sides really going for it now, they don't fancy extra-time! Burns sends a long pass into the box that Davison gets a head on but he's always stretching for it and the ball goes wide for a goal-kick.

83 min: Now Andrews is up the other end, cutting through the United midfield and having a shot from 30 yards along the floor that Mitchell does well to hold on to. Looks like "Bones" is looking to impress against his former club tonight.

82 min: Great play down the left-by Tinnion sees him cross into the middle and find Davison. He knocks it past his man and only has Collin to beat but Andrews gets back to put in a terrific block. The resulting corner is swung in by Tinnion but Collin does well to punch away under pressure.

79 min: Reds make their final change, with former United man Lee Andrews coming on for Greg Mitchell. Lee slots in to the same position at left-back.

76 min: After that nasty knock, Lakeland's back on the pitch but he's limping heavily. He's being given the chance to try and run that injury off before Eric Kinder considers making the change.

75 min: Lakeland limps off for the time being. Arnison takes the free-kick but it's well headed away by Davison, with Arnison failing to pull the trigger after picking up the clearance.

74 min: Lakeland and Wright clash near the corner flag and it's a free-kick to Reds. Lakeland's taken a knock while making the challenge and physio Geoff Haugh is on the pitch to give him some treatment.

70 min: Reds win a free-kick in a dangerous position on the right flank. The free-kick is chipped in to the box and Mitchell comes and claims it. He sends a huge kick forward that Reid controls brilliantly but his attempted throughball to Bowman is cut out by Edmondson.

68 min: Reid battles away in the Reds half and nicks the ball off May. He's fouled by the former United man but the advantage is played as the ball goes to Bowman. He beats his man on the right and finds Burns on the edge of the box and his shot is blocked. It falls to Bowman again but his shot is blocked too and it's cleared by the Reds defence.

64 min: United make their first change, with Sean Law coming off for James Reid. He's gone straight upfront to give a bit of support to Bowman.

63 min: Ryan Bowman's putting in a terrific shift this evening but hasn't had a huge amount of support from his midfield.

60 min: Reds make their first two changes of the evening, with Dan Robinson and Jonny Wright coming on for Gareth Brunton and Steven Hampton.

56 min: Good work by Tinnion down the right sees the Cockermouth lad win a corner. He swings it in to the middle but it's cleared back out to him. He beats his man but his second ball is disappointing as the wind carries it over Collin's bar for a goal-kick.

54 min: United do well down the right and win a corner. Tinnion takes a great inswinging corner into the middle that Blake connects with but it flies just over Collin's bar. The Reds keeper had to come to get that ball but got nowhere near it in these awful conditions.

51 min: No goal mouth action so far, but the wind has got even worse, with clearances from Reds players struggling to get out of their own half.

46 min: If there's no goal in the 90 minutes then there'll be 30 minutes of added time and if there's no winner then, it's penalties. The winners will face Penrith, managed by United's FITC coach James Tose and former United player Richard Prokas, at Brunton Park.

2009: Both teams are now coming out for the second-half. Little bit of gossip for you before the teams kick-off again. A few players who are close to confirming their places in United's team for the Masters Tournament in Newcastle this summer. Former players Darren Edmondson and Andy Preece are close to agreeing to play, as is the legend himself Warren "Sumo" Aspinall. Workington get the second-half underway.

1955: Thankfully, my estimate of time added on was correct. In very cold and windy conditions at Borough Park, it's 0-0 so far. Reds have probably had the clearer chances with the wind behind them but possessin was fairly equal. United should have the conditions in their favour for the second-half and will be looking to exploit that. More from me soon!

HALF-TIME - Workington 0 Carlisle United 0

45 min: No sign of how many minutes are due to be added on before half-time. I'm praying for a number less than 1...!

40 min: Edmondson flattens Tinnion just infront of the us by the dugouts. Conor's lost his boot and landed flat on his face. The Reds boss apologies to the United man. Burns takes the free-kick long into the Reds area but it's easily cleared.

38 min: United starting to gain a bit of momentum. Swinglehurst's throw-in finds Davison in the box who lays it back to Swinglehurst. His low cross finds Bowman who flicks it up and tries a spectacular overhead-kick but it's comfortable one for Collin.

34 min: Reds go close again! The ball bobbles up inside the United half and McCullough has a crack from about 30 yards out and it almost catches out Mitchell but he backpedals to tip it onto the bar and over. The ref didn't spot the touch from Mitchell though and gives a goal-kick.

32 min: Law wins a free-kick after being pulled down just inside the Reds half. Burns takes the free-kick and Bowman flicks it on but Collin comes and claims the ball.

24 min: United's first real chance of the game. Burns plays the ball out wide to Lakeland who sends a cross in from the right. Several players miss it and it almost comes to Tinnion in the middle but it just won't sit up and Collin comes to clear the ball.

20 min: Ruttledge and Aldred challenge for the ball on the byline and it goes out. The ref gives a corner, despite Aldred's protests. Brunton takes a terrific corner right into the middle and Mitchell does brilliantly to catch and hold on to the ball just underneath the bar.

18 min: Blake does well to win the ball in midfield. He heads out wide before lofting a ball into the box that sees Collin and Bowman challenge for the ball, with the Reds keeper coming out on top.

16 min: Almost an opener for Reds! Gareth Arnison does brilliantly to get through on goal and only has Mitchell to beat. The United keeper get a slight touch to force him wide but he's struggling to keep his balance and his weak shot is stopped on the line by Aldred.

12 min: Reds win a corner on the right that's swung deep into the middle but Swinglehurst at the far post flicks it out for another corner. The second one is a better ball and Edmondson has a free header but he sends it well wide.

9 min: Difficult conditons for both sides so far as the wind keeps holding up any ball over head height! Reds have probably had slightly more of the play but it's been tight.

4 min: Reds win an early corner after Aldred tries to shadow the ball out of play. It's lofted in to the middle from the left and Edmondson gets his head on it but it's well over Alex Mitchell's goal. I have a feeling that Edmo would love to get on the scoresheet for Reds tonight.

2 min: Reds' player-manager Darren Edmondson, who has used himself sparsely in league games this season, started at centre-back this evening. He was better known as an attack-minded full-back in his days at Brunton Park.

1909: United will be kicking off and will be attacking the Town End (and thus into the wind), with Reds attacking the Derwent End. Tinnion and Bowman get us underway.

1907: Both teams are now out on the pitch and the pre-game festivities are taking place. The two captains tonight are Tom Aldred for United and Adam Collin for Reds.

1905: If you're a subscriber to United World you can listen to full commentary on tonight's match with United media officer Andy Hall and Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey. For more details just click here.

1902: I won't lie to you, it's absolutely freezing here on the West Cumbrian coast this evening. It's actually quite clear in the sky but that stiff Solway breeze is making it difficult to keep hold of any paper in the press box here at Borough Park! Still no sign of the teams here.

1859: The two line-ups are as follows:

Workington: Collin, Hampton, Mitchell, May, Edmondson, McCullough, Rossi, Main, Arnison, Ruttledge, Brunton. Subs: Johnson, Robinson, Andrews, Wright, McLuckie.

Carlisle United: Mitchell, Lakeland, Swinglehurst, Blake, Aldred, Cleary, Law, Davison, Bowman, Burns, Tinnion. Subs: Wood, Gillespie (GK) Reid, Sloan.

1857: Evening everyone and welcome to tonight's Minute by Minute report for the Cumberland Cup Semi-Final between Workington and Carlisle United. It's a young side out for the Blues this evening but they've impressed all season. For the home side, it's a mix of youth and experience and it looks like it should be a cracking game. Both line-ups coming up shortly.
