GETTING BACK TO BASICS

Posted on: Mon 16 Mar 2009

United goalkeeper Ben Williams gave us his reaction to a hard-earned point against Scunthorpe at the weekend.

He said: "It was a disappointing result on Tuesday night as not enough of us turned up and performed. After that performance it was important for us to start well and get that goal ahead in today's game and then try and see it through.

Scunthorpe have got a quality pair of forwards in Hayes and Hooper. We spoke about dealing with them in the week, getting back to basics and defending better and I think that showed today as we looked more solid as a unit than we did against Orient.

The gaffer's made it clear at half-time that he wants us to keep it tight at the back but he also said he didn't want us to sit back and try and soak up too much pressure.

It wasn't easy out there with the conditions which were terrible but we had to keep on playing football and trying to push on for a second goal.

Although it probably looks difficult in those conditions from the stands, you don't really get a true idea of how bad it is until you're out on the pitch. It's not easy trying to judge long balls when they get held up in the wind but I think the lads coped pretty well with most of it today.

Their goal was a bit frustrating. It's one of those where they've taken the free-kick quickly and caught us a bit off-guard. But the finish is just a wonder strike. I've seen them go in to the top corner and I've seen them go out for a throw-in, but he's caught it well and it's gone in off the bar and post and there's nothing you can do about them as a goalkeeper.

We knew we'd not been good enough on Tuesday night and the management made us well aware of that. It's a game we feel we should have won and we didn't turn up on the night so it was important for us to get rid of that result from our memory and we think we've done that today with a point against a good team."
