WE CAN'T COAST ALONG
Attacking midfielder Cleveland Taylor put in a man-of-the-match performance against Morecambe at Christie Park on Saturday as he took the play to the hosts and switched wings with Simon Hackney with excellent effect.
We spoke to him shortly after full time to get some reaction, and he told us: "I do feel like I'm getting there with the way that I'm playing. Obviously I have pre-season under my belt now, and I'm starting to feel more confident. I've been working on that with the management team, as well as building on the strengths that I have, and hopefully that is paying off for me now."
"I've got absolutely no excuses now," he added, "because we are in the fourth week of pre-season and I have been involved all the way. I definitely can't turn round and say that I'm not fit, because if I'm not feeling good now then I never will. I have worked really hard, because I want to do well for the team, and I also want the team to do well, and I'm feeling the benefit of the work that we have all been doing."
"Swapping wings with Simon Hackney is something that we have been doing in training," he said. "I've found that I have enjoyed doing that, because it brings another aspect to your game, and it also gives the opposition defenders something else to think about. It makes things less comfortable for them, and it means that we can either cut inside or go round them, and they find it harder to channel you."
"I think we shocked ourselves with the way we played overall today," he continued. "Pre-season has gone so well for us, in a way it's been too good to be true, and this has reminded us that we can't just coast along. Hopefully that kind of performance is completely out of the way now, and we will be looking to bounce back next Saturday in Bristol. Maybe this one was the kick up the backside that sometimes comes along at just the right time. Maybe people will now think that we're not as good as we thought we were, so it's up to us to get out there and prove otherwise. We can only do that by playing well, and that's what we will go out there to do in the Bristol Rovers game."
"I think we're all feeling down right now because of the way things have gone since we got back together," he concluded. "At least now we know that we can't be complacent in anything that we do. If we are, then we'll suffer in the same way that we did today. For myself, I have to set my standards of performance high. I won't accept anything else, and neither will our fans. My job is to help to attack, get forward effectively and win games, and I want to be doing that consistently. Ideally, as I have said to you before, I'll also be weighing in with a few goals, and all I can say is that I am trying with that. I seem to be getting closer and closer, but I'll be happier when they finally start going in."
