I WAS DUE A GOAL

Posted on: Tue 22 Apr 2008

We spoke to Simon Hackney this morning about the Southend result, and about getting ready for the trip to Millwall.

He said: "The lads are gutted about the result on Saturday. We worked so hard, particularly in the second half, and we played some good football. It was a real blow when Rav was sent off and, just like everyone else, I thought that was very harsh. I had a really good look, and I mean a really good look, and I thought it was very, very harsh. That game has been and gone now, though, so we have to get on with it, and the positive that we can take from it all is that we are still in the league position that 20-odd other clubs would prefer to be in. We have to remember that and use it to our advantage."

"We did appear a bit nervy in the first half," he admitted. "I think, when Gary Madine came on in the second half, it made a massive difference to us going forward. We were sitting back and there was a bit of panic in the first half, but we looked to do a lot more attacking after the break. I have been really impressed with Gaz. He isn't afraid of anything, he's a good lad, and I think he's got a really bright future ahead of him. I'm not just saying that either, because he has worked hard for this chance."

"People are bound to ask whether I meant that goal or not," he added, "and all I will say is that I meant to put it in to that area, definitely. I've gone to drive it across the front of goal, and the keeper has misread it. I needed that to go in, to be quite honest. My mum has been bugging me, saying it's been 17 games now without scoring, and things like that. I've had chances recently, and I think I was due one but, to be quite honest, it doesn't mean as much when you are looking at a defeat. I had a lump in my throat after the game ... not because I thought we'd given it up, because the lads will never do that, but it was a big blow to lose the game right at the end. I was devastated, I really was."

"Like I say," he concluded, "it's gone now, and we have to look at the positive side of it all. The gaffer has his plans for Millwall, and we know what we need to do, so we are going down there to get three points. I hope we can do it but, more than that, I know we can do it, as long as we play the way that we are capable of playing. We've worked so hard this season, and come this far, and we are determined to see it through. Whilst there is still football to play, and points to go for, we will stick together and we'll just go for it."
