MIDFIELDER ON TRIAL
20-year-old ex-Cowdenbeath midfielder Roy Sandeman teamed up with United for a trial this afternoon, and did enough to convince manager John Ward that he's worth another look.
The gaffer told us earlier: "He's a Scottish lad, he's at University in Leeds and he plays for the British Universities representative team. He came to us as a recommendation from a friend of mine. The reason it has just happened is that we had to chase international clearance for him, because his last club was Cowdenbeath in 2005. The crazy rules that exist mean that his last club, along with the Scottish FA, have to pass over his International clearance so that he can turn out for us. That is the procedure, unfortunately, even though he is no longer a Cowdenbeath player, and hasn't been for some time. That was a big job for Sarah (McKnight) yesterday, and she got it sorted out so that Roy could have a game for us today. I've invited him back for the Reserve game at Chester on Monday, and we'll take it from there."
"As I say, he has joined us purely on a recommendation," he confirmed, "and it's the first time I've met the young man today. He did alright, I thought he looked decent in there, and we'll have another go with him. He'll come in tomorrow then he'll go back to Leeds for the weekend, because we will be going to Doncaster on Friday, but he'll be back on Monday for the Reserve game."
"The British University teams aren't somewhere we usually scout," he added, "but I have had experience with them before. When I was with York City we had Jon McCarthy, who was playing as a student in a similar sort of thing. I think they had a Student's World Cup then, back in the early 90's, and Jon was involved in that. So, as I say, Roy was a recommendation but, I have to say, if you are the pick of any sort of group in the country then you have to be a decent player, and that's why we decided to have a look."
