New arrival Adam Clayton had to be satisfied with a place on the bench as Greg Abbott stuck with the same side that had beaten League One high fliers Charlton seven days earlier.

Striker Vincent Pericard had the first opportunity with just 44 seconds on the clock when he picked the ball up following some strong challenges from Kavanagh. The big forward carried it towards the edge of the area. He shot early and it skipped up off the greasy surface, making it difficult for Barry Roche.

The whole stadium was left to wonder how Carlisle hadn't taken the lead on 11 minutes when Robson slid in to win a tackle on the edge of the box. Dobie squeezed it through to Pericard and he found himself one-on-one with Roche just 16 yards from the target. The stopper dropped to his left to block the effort, but it bounced up nicely in front of Hurst. He blasted his first volley right at Roche, and his follow-up lacked direction and Morecambe were able to relax.

Jim Bentley caused problems at the other end when he nodded a deep corner back into the mix. Drummond got his head to that, but he put too much on it and sent it over the bar.

The Cumbrians took the lead from a set piece on 21 minutes when Graham Kavanagh floated a free kick towards the penalty spot. Ian Harte rose to meet it and he left Roche with no chance as he buried his header into the bottom corner.

Neil Wainwright rounded off a good Morecambe move on 27 minutes with a whipped cross into the box but it flew in front of everyone as it made its way across the front of goal.

Wainwright was handed a golden opportunity on 33 minutes when a cross from the left skipped off Robson's head. It fell at the right winger's feet and it took a brave block from Harte to stop the goal-bound shot.

Pidgeley had to parry a drilled 16-yard volley from Mullin as the Shrimps stayed forward and Drummond was millimetres away from converting the rebound as he raced in.

Mullin tried a speculative shot from 28-yards just before the break as the game struggled to find a consistent tempo but Pidgeley watched it all the way as it headed towards him.

It opened up for Drummond in time added on but he dragged his 22-yarder wide as Taiwo came in to close him down.

Half Time: United 1 - 0 Morecambe

It took a cross from Robson that had the Shrimps back line stretched to get things going at the start of a stuttering second period, but Drummond was back to clear as the Shrimps sat deep.

And United doubled their lead on 55 minutes when Vincent Pericard glanced an Ian Harte free kick into the back of the net from a similar situation as the first half goal.

Kevan Hurst almost made things even more comfortable when he met a Robson cross with a full-blooded volley from just 6 yards, but it screwed up off his boot and dropped behind the goal.

Carlisle didn't get it all their own way and John Mullin missed a sitter when he was spotted as he made an intelligent run into the box. Lenny Pidgeley spread himself and made a point blank save to deny the moment.

Then Phil Jevons made things interesting when a corner delivery eventually came out to him on the edge of the box. He put his boot through it and celebrated as it found its way over the line, via Pidgeley's hand and the bar.

Drummond was sent off on 80 minutes when he got himself involved in an off the ball incident, but Morecambe weren't deterred and Mark Duffy grabbed an equaliser when his long range shot skipped up off the surface and bounced through Pidgeley on its way in.

That was enough to take the tie to a replay as a prolonged period of time added on ended with Anyinsah denied by a great save from Roche and a deflected follow up shot.
