Greg Abbott made three changes to his starting line up for the JPT Area Quarter Final trip to Saltergate with Adam Collin and Joe Anyinsah coming in along side Adam Clayton, who made his first starting appearance for the club.
The Spireites started brightly and Jack Lester evaded two challenges on the edge of the box to get himself into a crossing position. He drilled it in low and it needed Keogh to block and Livesey to hook it away to complete a much needed clearance.
Joe Anyinsah had a shot from distance on 10 minutes following a great ball from midifeld from Clayton. Hurst got a touch on that to release the United forward, but his 25-yarder was always going straight to the keeper.
Anyinsah had another shot blocked moments later on the edge of the box when Carlisle broke quickly from deep and Clayton showed his passing range when he spread the ball wide to find Hurst in space. His cross was a good one, but Page got a boot to it and hooked it clear.
The game came to a halt on 19 minutes when Taiwo and Robertson crunched into a 50:50 challenge in midfield, with the Referee immediately calling for medical assistance. Prolonged treatment followed which resulted in the Spireites player being stretchered from the field with a suspected broken left leg.
Strong work from Pericard on 28 minutes gave Hurst the chance to cross from the right and he found Robson making inroads at the back stick. The left winger won the header but he couldn't keep it down and it looped over the bar.
Joe Anyinsah had a powerful shot deflected wide for a corner on 34 minutes as Carlisle picked up the pace, and Ian Harte had a crisp volley blocked when he caught the ball on his right boot from the resulting corner.
Kevan Hurst somehow spooned the ball over the bar from just 3 yards in the 37th minute when Robson picked him out with a low cross, with the whole stadium left to ask the question as to how he had missed.
Anyinsah was unlucky not to score on 40 minutes when it opened up for him from an initial blocked shot. He set himself to pick his spot but he disappointingly dragged it wide.
Jack Lester sent the Spireites' first shot on target right at Adam collin in the 43rd minute and the big keeper was able to beat it away and send it out from danger.
Disaster struck deep into time added on at the end of the first half when Scott Boden went down under a challenge from Taiwo. The Referee took an age to make a decision but, after a look across at his Assistant, he eventually pointed to the spot. Substitute Darren Currie stepped up to take the penalty, and he made no mistake with an accurate finish into the bottom corner.
Half Time: Chesterfield 1 - 0 United
The Spireites came at United from the kick off and Jack Lester battled for position inside the area when Niven played the ball to his feet. Harte eventually got his boot to it as it appeared that the space might open up.
Jack Lester showed his skill on 52 minutes when he dropped his shoulder twice and skipped onwards towards the edge of the area. His shot had plenty of power but Collin did well to get both hands behind it and push it away.
Collin was needed again on 58 minutes when Niven nodded a curling corner back towards goal. Talbot was sniffing, but the Carlisle stopper reacted quickly to save at his feet. Breckin was there to meet the next set piece delivery and Collin had to tip the ball from under his bar as it tried to creep in.
Carlisle managed to ease the pressure with 62 minutes on the clock when Taiwo lofted a high ball towards the back post. Matt Robson held his ground and guided his header in at the near post beyond the despairing dive of Lee.
And things got even better for the visitors on 68 minutes when Peter Murphy was left unmarked at a corner. He rose majestically and thundered his header home via the slightest of touches from Lee.
Manchester City loanee Adam Clayton made it a game to remember for himself when he rounded off a flowing move involving Anyinsah and Robson with a wonderful finish that sent Lee the wrong way.
The Cumbrians looked very comfortable with their lead and they kept pushing forward, with Anyinsah and Taiwo going close with shots from outside the box.
Bridge-Wilkinson had a late shot smothered when he sent a low shot bat Lee from a pull back from Offiong, but it was job done for Carlisle as they took one step closer to Wembley.
