Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott made just one change to his starting line up for the Carling Cup second round trip to Ashton Gate with Paul Thirlwell coming back into midfield in place of player-coach Graham Kavanagh.
Evan Horwood lost his place on the bench following an injury to his thigh in the Monday reserve game with Conor Tinnion making the long trip south.
City started brightly with a good break down the right and the cross from Haynes invited a near post run. John Akinde made it his but he couldn't keep his header down and it flew over the bar.
United defended well for the opening 15 minutes with Akinde and Williams getting no purchase at all out of the central defenders.
And the Cumbrians should have taken the lead on 19 minutes when Robson lobbed a depp cross towards the far post. Right back David Raven met it on the volley just 4-yards from the target but it careered up off the slick surface and bounced just over the bar.
One touch football released Anyinsah moments later and he carried it into the area, only to bend his cross too close to the keeper, making it an easy save.
More good work from Anyinsah brought a shooting chance for Taiwo inside the Robins penalty area but he lost his footing and it screwed away from the target.
Raven and Livesey had to block shots from Akinde and Williams as City tried to up the pressure, but Livesey looked to have been beaten for pace when Haynes turned him 22-yards from goal. The big defender matched the run stride for stride and executed a perfect challenge just as the nippy striker shaped to shoot.
Kev Hurst put one over the bar from 22-yards as the Cumbrians swept forward, and Lee Johnson curled a right footer at Pidgeley at the other end as the game started to open up.
A good corner delivery from Kev Hurst caused some confusion in the Bristol box but the ball pinged around until Livesey sent it goalwards. Joe Anyinsah tried to help it on, but his touch took it away and off to safety.
Tom Taiwo thought he'd scored in the 41st minute when he latched on to a loose ball and curled a left foot shot around the dive of Dean Gerken. He was beaten, but it rattled off the outside of the upright and behind for a goal kick.
Half Time: City 0 - 0 United
Scott Dobie spooned a half chance from a Harte free kick over the bar within seconds of the restart and Joe Anyinsah sent one over from distance as the Cumbrians continued to look the more likely.
David Raven showed more attacking intentions in the 57th minute when he strode forward from deep and linked with Hurst to create some space. With a sniff of the target in front of him he let one go from 23-yards but it was straight at Gerken.
Carlisle got the lead their attacking play deserved on 61 minutes when Robson turned Ribeiro and crossed early. Dobie met it on the volley from 12 yards out and left Gerken with no chance as he buried it in the bottom corner.
Substitute Jamie McCombe shanked a sliding volley over the bar when Akinde unselfishly fed the ball across the face of the box, but it was United knocking on the door with Hurst and Anyinsah on the right combining to deliver a great cross. Robson tried to shoot as he recovered the cross but Skuse made the block to smother the goalbound shot.
The lead was doubled on 77 minutes when Taiwo fed a great pass through to Anyinsah. He stayed strong and twisted a path into the penalty box. Gary Madine was completely unmarked and he drilled the shot into the back of the net before wheeling away in celebration.
It was job done for United and they now go into Saturday's 12-15pm third-round draw live on Sky Sports News.
Incidentally, this was the first time since 1976 that Carlisle had made it this far in this competition.
