Venue:
Galpharm Stadium
Attendance:

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott named an unchanged starting eleven for the visit to the Galpharm Stadium with Scott Dobie and Gary Madine making it onto the bench at the expense of Kane and Offiong.

The Terriers found themselves with the first chance of the game when United wasted three opportunities to get the ball clear. Pilkington delivered it but Roberts sent his header right at Collin.

A third minute corner found Trotman unmarked at the back post but his downward header was always going wide.

Back-to-back corners for Carlisle on 6 minutes almost led to the opening goal when Kavanagh found Livesey inside the 18 yard box. The big defender got his head to it but the ball hit the angle of post and bar. Hurst got to the follow up but he couldn't keep his shot down and it flew over the bar.

Eccleston overlapped on the left on 18 minutes but Keogh closed him down and the shot, when it came, was right at Collin.

A good passing move from the home side put Heffernan clean through on goal but his first touch was heavy and that gave Collin the chance to race out. He spread himself and blocked the shot right in front of the travelling fans.

The Cumbrians had a goal ruled out for offside on 28 minutes when Clayton spun in midfield and fed Robson through. The nippy winger finished it off but the celebrations were cut short when the flag was raised.

Richard Keogh saved the day on 31 minutes when he completed a last ditch tackle to deny Eccleston a one-on-one opportunity from what had appeared to be an offside starting position.

A wicked ball in from Robson on 34 minutes had Duffy interested but the Terriers closed ranks to snuff out the chance. The ball was moved forward at pace and Eccleston tried an audacious lob from distance when he spotted that Collin had strayed off his line. It had plenty of power but it fell wide of the mark.

A superb free kick from Kavanagh on 42 minutes found Duffy on the move and his flicked header from 17 yards had Smithies back-tracking as it dropped just over the bar.

Half Time: Terriers 0 - 0 United

Peter Murphy replaced Ian Harte (suffering with a tight hamstring) at the start of the second half and it was United on the front foot when Keogh passed it inside to Clayton. He found Robson on the left flank and his cross was ushered behind for a corner by Peter Clarke.

The Terriers grabbed the lead on 50 minutes when Pilkington stole a yard inside the area and clipped his header beyond the sprawling Adam Collin and into the back of the net via the upright.

Pilkington had the chance to double the lead on 50 minutes when a Roberts cross sat up in front of him 12 yards out. He wrapped his foot round it but he couldn't keep it down.

Kevan Hurst screwed a shot wide from 10 yards as United tried to reply, and his reaction suggested that he felt that he should have done better.

Clayton sent one wide from long range as United kept trying to make things happen, but Danny Livesey had to be at his best on 76 minutes when Pilkington broke through. He took the ball off the striker's toes just as he shaped to shoot.

An outswinging cross from Richard Keogh popped up between the keeper and his defenders on 80 minutes and Dobie got there with a powerful header that was angling towards the roof of the net. It took a great save from Smithies to prevent the substitute from grabbing the equaliser.

But it was a great moment for youngster Ben Marshall on 83 minutes when he held his run as Robson sprinted into the box. The cut back was perfect for a neat side footed tap into the bottom corner.

The Cumbrians survived a flurry of late chances, with Collin saving twice from Eccleston and Pilkington, but they held on to take home a well-deserved point.
