United remained unchanged for the visit of Huddersfield as they looked to build on the thrilling five goal victory over MK Dons at the weekend.
The Terriers almost had the lead with just 3 minutes on the clock when Rhodes stole a yard at a corner. His header beat Collin but it also beat the post.
It was a brief respite though as Matt Robson lost the ball in midfield when he had a heavy touch. It spooned up high and dropped over Harte, allowing Novak to touch it around the advancing Adam Collin. He had the whole goal to aim at and he didn't disappoint as he stroked it into the empty net.
A quick break from Carlisle on 8 minutes brought a great cross from Murphy that Dobie did well to get to. The block sat up nicely for Clayton but he couldn't keep his 22 yard volley down and it whipped over the bar.
Pilkington curled a dipping effort over the bar when he cut in from the left, and the quick free kick routines from the visitors twice left the Cumbrians short at the back with Adam Collin screaming for support.
Peter Clarke sent another corner header inches over when he made his run to the near post, and Thirlwell had to block from Peltier when he took it past Murphy and into a shooting position.
Peter Clarke then bullied his way through two challenges tight by the touchline before poking it towards the six yard box, and it somehow bobbled into Collin's hands with red shirts looking to apply the finishing touch.
United started to see more of the ball as the half hour approached and determined work from Hurst won his side a corner when the cause looked to be lost. Dobie got to the delivery but it was behind him and he could only guide it over the bar.
Kay nodded over as the crosses kept peppering the United box, but the home side nearly got the equaliser on 35 minutes when Harte curled a deep free kick into area. Dobie got a flick but it was blocked, and it eventually came to Peter Murphy. He tried to create some space but it knocked back off his toe and ran through to Smithies.
The Cumbrians thought they were back on level terms on 42 minutes when Dobie sprung the offside trap to go one-on-one with Smithies. The keeper spread himself and made the block, but Duffy was on hand to smash the rebound goalwards as he followed up. Unfortunately for him it continued to rise and it crashed back of the crossbar and was cleared to safety.
Half Time: United 0 - 1 Terriers
A slow start to the second half saw Carlisle trying to push forward more, and a cross from Richard Keogh had both Dobie and Duffy making their moves. Smithies watched it all the way and gathered beneath his bar.
Huddersfield doubled their lead on 56 minutes when Rhodes lost his man at a corner and put his header past Collin and into the back of the net.
Abbott went for broke with a double substitution on 62 minutes with Marshall and Taiwo replacing Hurst and Thirlwell, and Duffy harried his way through to go one-on-one with Smithies under pressure from Clarke. He got his shot in, but the keeper pulled off a wonderful save to deny him his sceond goal in two games.
Joe Anyinsah was there to meet the clearance but his thunderous drive was ruled out when Mr Evans spotted an infringement just as he smacked it into the net.
Collin saved from Pilkington when a mistake in midfield left the Terriers four against one up front, but it was good stuff from the keeper and he put it away for a corner.
Joe Anyinsah gave United hope with a volley that squeezed under Smithies deep into time added on, but Huddersfield shut up shop to take away their three points.
