Greg Abbott was forced into a late change ahead of kick off when Tom Taiwo had to pull out, and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson stepped into the breach to face champions Norwich City in what was always going to be an enjoyable end to the campaign.
United were in front with just 56 seconds on the clock when referee Andy Penn waved play on as Madine was fouled in midfield. Marshall strode forward and Madine made up the ground to confidently stroke the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
The Canaries tried to respond quickly but the shot from Martin curled away from the bottom corner with Collin beaten.
The afternoon got even better for the visitors on 7 minutes when Ian Harte floated a deep free kick towards the penalty spot. Jaosn Price moved to meet it, and he claimed the goal by the width of a hair as it brushed past him and into the back of the net.
Norwich thought they'd pulled one back with their next attack when Smith beat the offside trap and dinked the abll past the advancing Collin. Fortunately for the Cumbrians Ian Harte was there to stop the ball on the line. He still had work to do though and it was a cool drop of the shoulder that took him past Chris Martin and away to safety.
