IT HAD TO BE DONE AND WE'VE DONE IT

Posted on: Tue 05 May 2009

We caught up with defender Richard Keogh after the 2-0 win over Millwall on Saturday to get his reaction to the result and to United staying in League One.

He said: "We always do it the hard way don't we? But what a fantastic day it's been. We played really well today and thoroughly deserved the win with two fantastic goals.

"Training during the week was good, the tempo was great and I think that's helped us a lot. Coming into the game you could sense everyone was up for it and that showed on the pitch in the fact that we weren't nervous.

"Kav's goal was a belter, and a great start for us, but after recent games where we've taken an early lead only to concede late on, it's always going to play on your mind that you need that second goal. We probably could have got a second before half-time with some of the chances we've had but we were always confident in our ability to get the win.

"We weren't interested in the other scores at half-time, the gaffer didn't really want us to get involved in that. He wanted us to focus on our game and get the job done.

"It was only towards the end of the game that we started to hear a few things, I think Danny (Graham) was given a bit of information when he came on telling us to keep it tight as we knew what we had to do then. Apart from that we just went out like any other game and did what we needed to do.

"Getting that second goal so soon after the break was a real boost. It's a superb strike from Thirs, to be honest when it dropped to him I was saying 'don't shoot' but he's caught it brilliantly and pinged it into the top corner.

"When you've got players like Kav and Thirs, who've played a lot of their career at Premier League level, they have that extra bit of quality and they've used it today to make the difference.

"I think there's always going to be that bit of edginess when you go two goals up, that temptation to sit back a little bit. I don't think we did it as much as we probably have in other recent games but they did have a bit more possession and put us under a bit of pressure. They've hit the bar through Alexander and on another day that might have gone in but we've had a bit of luck today, and that's something we've not had much of this season!

"The last five or ten minutes were a bit of a breather as we kept the ball in their half of the field for longer periods. The front two have worked their socks off today. I wouldn't have liked to have been playing centre-half against them because they've chased everything down and given the Millwall defence a real tough time.

"The relief at the end was there for all to see and the lads are all buzzing. No-one wants to be in this situation, especially going into the last game of the season, but it had to be done and we've done it.

"We have to go away and build on this next season to make sure it doesn't happen again. I think we've shown in the last few games that we can be a good side against any team in this Division and if we keep the squad together and add a few more players then who knows, we could do what Millwall have done this season, turning it around from a relegation battle one season to making the play-offs the following year.

"I'm really looking forward to next season now. We'll all go away and have a nice, well-earned break over the summer and we'll come back raring to go."
