NOT MY GREATEST CROSS
We spoke to defender Zigor Aranalde after full time yesterday.
He said: "It always gets frustrating if you are dominating possession, but not scoring a goal. We were in charge right from the first minute, but they were still in the game simply because of the scoreline. It was a strong performance from us, and we found a goal through our patience. We know we should have found a few more with the chances we had, but it doesn't always work out like that. It would be great to win by two or three goals every time, but sometimes you have to keep battling and make sure that you do enough to win the game first. That was how it turned out for us today, so we should be pleased that we kept working to make sure that we took 3 points, because that is the most important thing."
"When you get to half time in a game like that, and you still haven't scored, I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't very frustrating for all of the players," he admitted. "You have to know that you are doing things right, and you have to keep going and keep trying different things. You have to believe that the goal will come. You have to try to stay calm and work hard. As I say, sometimes it won't come, but you make it harder for yourself if you start to rush things. If you keep playing your football then, more often than not, you will get the deflection that goes in, or the superb goal - either way, you have to keep going until it does come. We had a lot of shots in this game, and we have hit the post and their keeper has done well, so sometimes you have to put up with that. Then, when your goal does finally come, you have to make sure that you keep a clean sheet and get the result, which is what we did today."
"At half time the manager was very pleased with our performance, as was everyone else," he told us. "Apart from getting a goal we had done everything else. He basically told us to keep going, because that was the key to getting something. We knew that if we let our heads drop, and let them in to it, then we would struggle, so it was important for us to carry on the way that we had in the first 45 minutes."
"I have to be honest and say that the cross that I put in for the goal wasn't the greatest," he said, "but Danny Graham made it look much better than it actually was. He came to the near post, and that affected the shape of their defence. He looked like he was going to take it, then he let it pass, and the defender didn't stand a chance after that. Joe was then there to slot it away, which was good. That's why this game is a team game. If those two hadn't reacted to my cross in the way that they did, then it wouldn't have looked that good, so full credit to them."
"Crewe changed their tactics after we scored," he told us, "and threw three men up front. It was then up to us to keep them quiet, and I think that we dealt with things very well overall. They had a few crosses that had us stretched, but that will always happen, so it was important for us to work hard at the back and keep them out. Obviously we did that, so we are very pleased. We needed the clean sheet as well, because there have been a few games where we have not been able to do that recently. The whole team gets a lift when we don't concede, that goes without saying, but it's especially good for the defenders and the keeper."
"We are on a superb run in the League with our home games," he added. "and we are determined to keep it going. Our performances have been good at Brunton Park, and we have even managed to turn things around here when we have gone behind. Today was slightly different again, because it was more a case of us dominating and making sure that we turned that in to 3 points. We have to be able to play these different types of game, because there will be many different ones between now and the end of the season."
"To be sat in second place at this time of the season means that it is all there for us," he concluded. "What we have to do now is make sure that we keep on top of things and keep doing things the right way. We have to take each game and work towards it as it comes along, making sure that we have prepared as thoroughly as possible. This one today has gone, so we need to be pleased about the three points, but start looking towards how we will play against Cheltenham. It won't be easy against them, so we will have to concentrate and do things properly. It has never been easy at Whaddon Road. We have to get ready for a battle, or for anything else that might come our way. If it is a battle, then we have to be ready, but if it's a game where football can be played, then we have to perform like that as well. They will definitely be ready for us, simply because of where we are in the League, so it will be another very good test for us."
